Ia there anyway to prevent ticks Goosd & cheap.

I am looking for the best tick prevention at a reasonable price. Is there anyone who uses cattle ear tags or any other tick preventive that doesn't cost an arm and leg and truly works. Please and Thanks Randy. randyfox70@yahoo.com?????

Posted by Jrkb2012 on 07-19-2015 03:39 AM:

I started using the cattle tags,(purple ones) about 3 or 4 months ago,,and I swear by them,,I haven't had a tick on any of my dogs since I started using them,,it cost me around a buck fifty per tag,,but you gotta buy a box at a time,,they don't sell single tags,,theres 20 in a box,,and they last along time

Try freedom 45 from tractor supply if you want to use something intended for dogs, been using it for two years now with no ticks, 10 bucks for 3 applications one last 6 weeks i re apply at 5 weeks

Frontline Spray
is as good as it gets for the money and safety. It is very low toxicity and you can spray it on your clothes (allow to dry)as well prior to hunting. A couple of sprays down the back of the dog and work into haircoat of back, neck, head. Safe to use on puppies, pregnant and lactating females.

http://www.amazon.com/Frontline-Fle...YPGGTMJP3N4BJ32

Soresto collars
work well for dogs as well but they can take a couple days to build up on the oil layer before providing protection. One collar lasts for up to 6-8 months.

NexGard:
Oral tablet given once monthly.
We've been using NexGard with 100% efficacy in one of the worst areas of the US for ticks - Eastern Texas!

Bravecto
Same class as NexGard. Oral tablet given every 3 months for flea and tick prevention.

I wonder what would happen if a human took NexGard? Would it hurt them? Would it keep ticks off? I mean, we give dogs the same pills that we take so why can't we take the same pills as dogs?

Richard

You mite want to try putting a dozen or so garlic cloves on a string and hanging it around your neck.

I use Preventic collars but they have went from twelve dollars to fourteen dollars each. So I'm going to try the purple tags from Tractor supply. Several people have posted on different webs and written me and say they are good. Thanks for the help.

Why don't you give that a shot Richard and we will see how that works out for you at AO. Haha

I just use a flea and tick spray from tractor supply and spray down each hound weekly. And put fresh cedar bedding in their houses monthly

front line if you ever have to take your hound to the vet to be treated for tick born illness you will find out it is better to go spend the money on something that has been proven effective than back yard bull in supper high tick infested areas also recommend that you set up a 50 gallon barrel with happy jack dip this combination has worked well 4 me we also keep our hounds on a heart worm preventive year round and have them to the vet every spring to be checked out and keep their shots up to date keeping hounds is not cheap but the enjoyment we get when we cut them lose is worth every penny spent

Do you wear one all of the time or do you just put it on when you go hunting? My grandson is coming over to stay with me this coming weekend and wants to go hunting. I will try the NexGard on him first. He is pretty tuff.

I don't know if garlic would work for ticks by putting a string around your neck, but I know Vampires will leave you alone cause they are scared of it. I read where no one wearing a string of garlic has ever been bitten by a vampire. LOL!

Bob,

Ya, but all things have 2 sides to it, the garlic repels vampires, sure, this Is known Fact. But in the south, it's a attractor for Chupacabra's,,,, If they come in, and don't fall off on a vampire leaving, they might come after You,

Ticks..!

Bravecto as Dr.Hallada mentioned I think is the best. 3 month protection in one pill/treat. Pills/treats are designed for body weight.. Ticks are thick here in s.ga, but haven't gotten a single one of any off my dogs, and they run swamps and hills.. Great stuff. Why bother with all the other, when you can give this treat like pill, that my dogs gobble up immediately.

It's been a good one Ken. We have over a thousand patients on it now with only a few failures with flea prevention. This occurred after two months of giving the pill in less than 5 dogs. It's been really good for ticks. We have one hospital in the area that sent their NexGard back and is going exclusively Bravecto. I like both products and they are the most effective flea/tick products to ever hit the market.

I see nothing about Bravecto being effective on deer tick which is our problem here in Minnesota. We are one of the top states for Lyme disease in the country. Will it work on more ticks then what it is listed on their web site?

NexGard got approval this year for Ixodes (deer tick) label. I'm not sure where Bravecto is on that. It came out about 6 months after NexGard. I will be surprised if it doesn't since they are the same class of drug with the same mode of action. They are very similar, except for their half life.

I practiced in Winona,MN for 6 years from 1990-1996. It was during the big initial outbreak in Lyme Disease. We had over 100 cases of Lyme disease in dogs one year with only 1 of those dogs coming from MN and the rest from WI. The 1 dog from MN was a lab used for hunting in WI. So at that time it was thought to be only a problem in WI , specifically Lacrosse, Trempeleu , and Buffalo counties. Dogs vaccinated with Fort Dodge Lyme vaccine seemed to be protected with no disease diagnosed in a vaccinated dog. I'm not sure how that is working now there, but it is sad to see MN being a hot bed now too.

I'd be using Frontline Spray every time I turned a dog loose. That's what I did when I lived there. I sprayed my clothes down too. Once you see how devastating this disease can be on a person, you should do everything possible to prevent it. Many of my neighbors and my ex wife and I contracted it. I recovered fast but some people never did and were on meds for years. Can be a very debilitating life long disease. Makes a $32 bottle of Frontline Spray a very good deal.

Ticks

After I started useing Bravecto , I haven't seen the first tick period, which leads me to think all species are covered .

Posted by Bob Hennessey on 07-22-2015 03:14 AM:

I believe the wild turkeys are spreading the deer ticks. It seems like as the wild turkeys become established in an area the deer ticks appear. So far most of the dogs that come down with a tick disease in this area is either Lymes or anaplasmosis. Been using frontline this year but used the maroon magnum cattle tags before with good luck never found a tick on a dog, or had a dog come down with a tick disease when I used them. Couldn't find the tags this year until just lately and they went up about $8 dollars a bag. I started using the tags right after I had a dog come down with Lymes. I also give Lyme shots every year now.
