Serious ?
Back in the day especially the walker dogs you could tell by looking at them they're was some shep being put in them why was it for track speed or coon treeing ability thought about trying it myself tryied a bunch I mean a bunch of those supposed to be sure fire cur dogs it's harder to find a good one of them than a good coon treeing dog !!
I really dought it was for track speed my bet is for maybe a winding ability?? Same as the whole birddog cross idea. hunted some pacman dogs longer hair called one ol shep. better winding type dogs than track drivers. if i had track issues i would try crossing some house bred stuff a little wild but i wouldnt go shephard route.
I think it was to get the cold nose, deer races, fox races out of them and put more tree in em

shoot I did the shepard we had when I was a child was a squirrel , possum , coon treeing machine . she's the dog that made me want to get a full blooded coon hound and start really coon hunting like the big boys .

I have old pictures of my grandpas hunting dogs and some them are odd looking things, I was never in the woods with them but was told they would tree anything that climbed which is what he wanted.
