-- what would you do? (http://forums.ukcdogs.com/showthread.php?threadid=928420262)
what would you do?
Have a litter of pups right now that are only 7 weeks old and we've been letting them loose in the evenings to run around, but lately they are getting further out than I think they should for there age. So my question is should I keep letting them roam like that or pen them back up? I have my opinion just want to hear everyone elses

Well
I guess its whatever you want. They are your pups. Myself I would let them run. Walk with them, time to start the training. Have fun.

if its not dangerous I would let them go. Sounds like some good genes there to have pups that young that aint scared.

Well I like for them to run loose when there young too, but these pups took off some time early this morning cause I couldn't find them for a few hours. Found them 2 fields over from ours coming from the neighbors pond. Wouldn't be so worried if they weren't so young. Its close to 1/4 mile from the house and there only 7 weeks old.

Dang. Brave little boogers. Ive never heard of such from a seven week old pup. I have one 7 weeks here to. I let her run loose. Furthest Ive saw her from the porch is about 100 yards lol.

I'm gonna say something else had to have taken them that far away.. I've raised lots of pups and I've never seen any 7 week old pups that would go that far alone. They may have hooked up with a dog running loose and went that far..

I considered another dog may have taken them that far but haven't seen any strays running loose. I don't understand them going that far myself and usually when I'm out there they will get 100 yards or further but not like they were this morning.

Try cutting only half of them loose at a time. Or try cutting 2 or 3 loose at a time and see if you can determine which one/ones are taking them that far.
Could have run a deer. They are walkers. Lol

I wouldn't walk with them too much! That at times was a mistake I have made when raising a litter of pups. Sometimes you can create a habit of being part of the group and they will look for you to take them hunting and walk with you instead of hunting out on their own as they get older. IMO best to keep an eye on them when loose and they sound like they are natural go getters and it will still be there when they are older. A big pup pen would be nice with that litter.
