Very lucky bluetick pup and owner

I have a really nice little bluetick pup in the kennel. I usually run my dogs for exercise every day. I get on a 4 wheeler and turn them out here on the farm. We have 4 ponds and a bunch of trails thru the woods and fields. All my dogs are young, the oldest is not 2 years old yet. They love to play around the ponds.
Yesterday I noticed the bluetick male pup looked like he had caught a small water snake. I saw him carrying it in his mouth then all of a sudden shake his head real hard as if he was trying to kill it. Got ya didn't he?? I thought. I just figured the snake might have bit him on the lip.
This afternoon when I went to feed I noticed the pup was quiet. He usually throws a big bawl when I head for the kennel. He came right to me and I noticed fishing string hanging what looked to be off the side of his head.
Well the "snake" was a plastic bass lure and the string was attached to the hook stuck in his lip. We are lucky he didn't swallow the darn thing and get it hooked deep. I was able to remove it, it wasn't very deep. He didn't even yelp and was happy to have it out.
I let local kids fish in my ponds...will have to have a little talk with them soon.

Lure/fishing

It's nice of you to allow fishing, that is getting so hard to find these days. My son knows that there better not be anything left on the ground afterwards if he can help it. If there is something, he better do everything he can to get it cleaned up, even if it isn't his. Luckily we have permission to fish some really good farm ponds around us. That is because they know they will never see any evidence of us being there unless we pick up someone else's trash. I tip my hat to you letting people fish, it's a rare thing these days!

Wow, real lucky. It is nice you let people fish. I have shut all fishing off at my place. Every year I was picking trash up, even pulled a TV out of the pond, beer cans, liquor bottles and other things. I have had to put posted signs up and call the law now. I hate it because there is plenty of fish.

i often fish at the river close to home. i was shocked to see a young group of fellows come along and the first thing they did was pick up all the trash near them and bag it. quick easy and was impressive.then they were fishing in short order. sometimes the younger generation do things better than the older generation.

Yeah, I hate to say no...especially to kids that just want to go fishing. I figure it beats hanging out on the street corner or plucking away at a cell phone all day. I really don't have any other problems besides this one and the dog picked the worm up out of the water so i believe that the kid probably would not have left it there if he could have seen it.
My thing is how much it could have hurt the little dog if he had swallowed it and it got stuck somewhere it couldn't be seen. I would have never known what was making him sick until I went to the vet and got that bill. Which I am certain would not have been a light one. The pup is bred too well to not fix.

Bass fishing lures are expensive. What happened more then likely, was that it broke off, mid cast or a bass broke it off, then threw it. The lure floated up to the surface, and it floated to shore. I have stripped down to my skibbys and jumped out my boat to retrieve a lure before. I doubt it was left behind intentionally.

I take my dogs fishing all the time, its rare they mess with my lures, probably because they smell like fish. Ill doubt you will run into this problem again.

Thank you sir, he seems to be doing O.K. with the fish hook injury. He will be a year old in a few weeks...chased and barked at his first coon he ever saw jus the other day. Still has a lot of puppy in him, but he has a big bawl mouth and looks to spare. I went a long ways to get this dog and I have high hopes for him.
I used to think monofilament was bad for wildlife and get all of it up that I can find. Never gave fish hooks a second thought until now.

We walk our hounds daily also....keeps us healthy too Glad to hear others get their hounds out for more than a night of hunting. Saw a video on here somewhere of a bluetick breeder that took his pups to a pond to swim thought that was great....He would take a drag in and out of the water and the whole litter was jumping in and out of the pond. it was a great pup training video.
