There aren't many places in Indiana where they aren't thick!
I've hunted across Northern Indiana, much of the East (North and South of Richmond) and not too far from Greencastle (around Terre Haute), in the West.
Everywhere I've gone, it wasn't uncommon to tree 4-5 coon or more in a 2 hour hunt, with the right guide.

Guide is everything.
English days last year my cast scored on 11 coon.
Last year at the zones in Greencastle we treed 2 coon combined in Friday and Saturdays casts.

I'll admit it... I didn't understand "thin" coon until I moved South. And the guide is everything, but even "thin" coon in Indiana is better than "thick" coon most everywhere else!
It's a different yard stick, down here!

I went up there and it seemed like a coon zoo to me. Wed see them crossing the rd while heading to turnout. Dogs be winding while walking to turn out. Stuff like that dont happen here. Mine treed one on a old washing machine. Some feller named Jim was guiding. I think we tree like 5 in 2 hrs. Plus run a fox lol. It really was something to be struck within minutes every time you cut. I enjoyed it. May try and go back some day.

I know... I can't remember the last time I saw one crossing the road!
When I was a kid, I was the only one who had permission to hunt the local grain elevator. In fact, I could call ahead and the handyman would go out and turn off the blowers/dryers on the barns full of corn, so I could hear my dogs!
I took a cast for Autumn Oaks back there and while we drove through the elevator grounds, between the barns, we probably saw 12 or more coon crossing in front of us. We split treed on four right off the bat and then treed in the middle of a corn field (that's right, we plant corn around our grain elevators!) on a high tension tower. And on the side of the tower were 7 coon! I thought the old boys from Arkansas and Louisiana, heads were going to explode!

Paul,
it's all where you draw out from Greencastle. around there and north you can get into some thicker coon...score several coon in a 2 hour hunt. if you go an hour or more south you can get into some thinner coon; where scoring on 2 coons wins most hunts.
I live in the southeastern part of Indiana and at most of our hunts scoring on 3 coons in a 2 hour hunt is a rarity...most nights guys win with 200-400 plus range.
again it's all about your guide and if theyre moving. hopefully the full moon doesn't screw things up too much. i'm looking forward to seeing you and the boys.

im a member of the grencastle club and it really all depends on how the coons are moving but with that being said its very rare to have a dead cast around here you can have scores ranging from 225 to 800 maybe more on the right night last thurs. in a $kc hunt sored 3 in an hour hunt not more than 200yds from the truck just all depends on where you go and who guides ya there are plenty of coon here

Is 70 miles to far too ask to guide out of Greencastle
I think that would depend on the deadline and the type of hunting. 70 miles may be doable if you get out early, but if you are hunting patch woods with quick drops and a lot of driving between woods, you'll burn a lot of time.
70 miles to one big woods where you hunt all 2 hours, and then drive the 1-1/2 back, is one thing. A lot of driving around after you get there, is another...
With that said... I wouldn't necessarily drive 70 miles to hunt in one big woods of thick timber, this time of year!

You'll probably tree a couple, if you bring something that's able to manage the hills, hollers, snakes and gators.

No that I live down here, I think we need an "exchange" program... you boys from Indiana and Ohio come down here, while we go up there and hunt your woods!
What do you think Matt?

Dang it Matt... I just put out feeders for you! But I may just take you up on your offer.
Yep, that's right... first time I've ever done that. But I have a pup to train, and don't want him thinking that all coon are always a mile away!
