need help

I have a good young dog but here of late he has started to quit treeing when he sees my light whethwe it be 60 yds or six feet. How do I fix this he is as good as any I have ever seen but I gotta fix this it just started.

Did it start when it got warmer? Maybe he figures you've found him, and he can stop wearing himself out? I've got one, that will hardly chop, once it gets warm...

Or... have you been disciplining him for barking out at the house?

Have you tried walking in on him, without your light on? I assume it's you that triggers him to stop barking, not the light.

Deschmidt27 asked some good questions. I will be more general. Did you do anything or have anything happen that triggered this. Think hard when you first noticed it.

Without knowing your dog and your hunting methods it's hard to say how to fix the problem. First you have to identify the root of the problem.
Have you whipped him for treeing possums ?
Has he been whipped by coons coming out shot in the butt ?
Have you jumped coon out to rerun ?

No discipline for treeing possums or barking. He doesnt bark at home and never whooped him for treeing and wont. Nothing that i noticed happened. Did have one jump out back in kill season around January. He has never been what i call whooped by a coon he wont quit til i tell him dead.

I had a fine hound that would quit barking when I stood back and shined, but I had killed a lot of coons over her, and she was waiting for the shot and watching for the the coon to fall. She would still stand on the tree, just quit barking.
He might see you and decide his work is done- he found the coon and you found him.

Does "quit treeing" mean he stops barking or he leaves the tree? Most hunters won't agree with this, but biggest reason I've seen for young dogs doing this is gun shyness. Gun shyness comes in different degrees. some dogs run away, some curl up and act disinterested, some just stand there.

I'm not a expert or nothing but if u get with in 60 yds of him and he quits barking just shut your light off and don't move another step till he starts treeing again. This is a bad habit. We all want to rush in their and check things out but in this case its best to wait. Make sure he's barking or don't go in. He will catch on your not coming unless he's treeing. Just my opinion though

I agree with Jason... the same dog that quits chopping when it gets hot, was also whooped for barking, before I got him. When he first started, he would only tree till I got there.

So you may need to walk and stop, walk and stop, if he stops barking. Then get him excited, like you would a pup, at the tree and reinforce treeing. Coming into him is reinforcement, so you need to do all you can to only reinforce the behavior you prefer. We're not saying leave him, but just stay back.

With my dog, it just took a lot of loving on him, when he barked to teach him that was preferred.

What i typically do is take the dog out with a good mannered solid hound, when your pup quits treeing tiw him back and knock the coon out to the otherdog and pet it up like no tommorrow, do not let your pup have it and certainly dont praise it, now dont switch it either, just kinda ignore it......the results will bbe 2 things the positive is this will show your pup that he gets a reward for staying treed, the negative is it may take away some independence, but you can give thhat back to him by sinngling him out

He hasnt had but 15 or 20 shot to him. He is a ntch already has been for about a month and a half now. He is not coon shy im talking all it takes is a glimpse of one or the smell of one he loses his mind. He hates them. And he stays there he dont move from where he is at. He just turned 13 mths. And this all started about a month after i pulled him from hunts. Im going to try the tie him back thing hope it works. He is usually first and first any way if he is with another its usually they come into him. He has only been in 7 cast. two chkc and 5 ukc. No bad dogs i knew all the dogs and had hunted with them prior.
