Flea And Tick Dip

Like do you just fill up and barrel with the dip and water and just "dunk" your dog in real quick? Stupid question but if thats how you do it then i know why they call it a Dip

It's an old fashion term for used to work. There are much better options now for fleas and ticks. The problem with dips are they work for a day and then they lose their effectiveness. You are better off getting a product that lasts for 30 days. My favorite product for fleas and ticks is NexGard. Oral tablet you give monthly and lasts for 30-40 days.

If ticks are really bad then add some Frontline spray and apply it lightly across the back of the dogs before hunting or monthly if they are just around home. Keeping your grass cut short around the kennels and home will help keep tick numbers down.

Bravecto just came out that claims to last for 3 months. It's in the same class as NexGard. Kills both fleas and ticks. I've seen a few dogs where it only lasted for 60 days before the dogs had active flea infestation. Again Frontline spray monthly will provide better tick repellent.

Frontline Spray might be enough on its own if the fleas aren't too bad and they haven't developed resistance in your area. It's pretty cost effective too and can be bought online from Amazon or your local vet over the counter.

Bathe your dogs with a good emollient shampoo once a week or at least monthly. These don't have harsh detergents and don't dry the skin coat out like cleansing shampoos do. Most flea and tick shampoos are cleansing shampoos. You should only need that if your dog has skunk smell on its oil layer of the skin or if you need to remove poison oak or poison ivy oils.

Good luck!

Doc

See your other post about this, I answered your question there. As to the other comment about "used to work"...it still does work, it's just as posted, no long term thing. It wasn't back then and it's still not now. It was never presented as a long term thing either...it was and still is a quick cost effective way to get control of the flea infestation of several kennel dogs. As stated in my other post, you do not dunk the dogs head under the liquid, a dog might ingest or breathe in the chemical and that would not be good.
if you just have one or two dogs it is not considered cost effective. You have to get a large barrel, find and buy the chemical and then mix it up and dip one or two dogs. Where it is useful is when several hunting buddies with 15 or so dogs get together on a Sunday and dip them all. Many farm supply stores used to offer the service for a nominal fee in the summer. i haven't seen this in a while. Like most things that are "cost effective"...it's not the most effective.

I use Happy Jack flea and tick dip and it works just fine and lasts a couple months, I don't dunk the dogs , I just mix enough in a bucket to do the dog or dogs I wanna do and put it on the them with a sponge or a cloth so they are wet. if you use flea shampoo the dip will not work. the shampoo washes the natural oils off the hair that the dip sticks to.

It's been great in our hospital and we have dispensed thousands of doses now in the last year. I've had only one dog that vomited after taking it.

NexGard is the hottest thing going right now in veterinary medicine for fleas and ticks because of the safety margins and efficacy. This stuff just works and fast. 100% kill rate in 4 hours and it maintains this fast kill rate for up to 30 days. It's better than Comfortis or Trifexis (Spinosad) because NexGard kills ticks too. Comforted and Trifexis don't get ticks. Safety studies are better on NexGard. This newer class has been tested at 1000x dose with no serious side effects. Dogs love the taste and it's easy to give.

Come on guys stop dipping your dogs in those chemicals. That stuff came out 40 years ago when there weren't any good flea and tick products available. There is no dip that is going to last 3 months neither. You are just getting lucky or not seeing fleas. Keep them on a good monthly preventative and keep those fleas from getting a foot hold in your kennels. One flea will lay 1000 eggs. Think prevention instead of treatment.

.

If I may add something and ahallada i would love to hear your opinion on this.

One thing you don't want your dog to get is one of the tick illnesses out there. Ehrlichia, Lymes, etc. Discussed this with my vet just a couple days ago and he said that the tick giving the dog the illness has to bore in and be there a certain length of time. He said like 48 hours. NexGard kills the tick before the dog can get the disease. I am sure nothing is 100% but if this can cut down the chance of your dog getting sick by 90% then it is worth it not even taking into consideration the ticks and fleas are gone. One round of testing for tick disease will pay for a years supply of NexGrad.

My second question is he said if the dog was like under 60 lbs you break the tablet in half. Is that normal procedure?

lol old fashioned term for used to work ? it surely did use to work on our dogs in the south , it's just we can't get the stuff that used to work any longer ! back before they outlawed kreasote we would keep a barrel mixed up at our feed store and dunk everybody's dogs any time they wanted . then they say it ain't safe but all our ol dogs lived to die of old age .

times they be a changing . I use permethrein 10% these days with good luck just mix according to the dog dip instructions and use my pump sprayer and spray dogs kennels and all . I keep a small spray bottle mixed in the truck and will spray my dogs and my own pant legs before we turn out . works for me quite well .

Yes on all the above.

That's why I said to use Frontline Spray for bad tick areas. You can use Frontline Spray with any of the oral forms. NexGard is the best flea product I've sold in over 20 years of being in the business. Permethrin works great as a premise spray , but it doesn't last long on dogs and it has toxicity issues in both dogs and cats. I've treated my share of convulsing dogs that ingested Permethrin. We avoid using it on dogs now.

.

Actually the ticks that get on my dogs are picked up in the woods hunting.

One last note I was told that makes it easy is that the dogs like the taste and eat it like a treat.

Thanks for the help.
