Nutrition

I have a female that is about a year and a half old, and still hasn't come into heat, but she is really skinny too. I wonder if she is lacking a vitamin or something. I have tried a few different foods. (5 or so) I have not hunted her for a few weeks because I am trying to make her put on a little weight. No luck. I kind of think that it is linked in some way (size to heat) and maybe still have a chance, but maybe that is just me in denial.

allot of dogs are like that at that age "they're like lanky teenagers" when she gets to be 2-3 years old she could bulk right up. I wouldn't sweat it at 1 1/2yrs IMO
As far as coming in heat goes I don't know what to tell you there but for my part I still wouldn't worry to much for another year. I know most would have come in by now by I would think she still could just be a late bloomer especially being slight of build that way. IMO

What feed are you feeding?
I don't feed anying under 28/20
Are you feeding twice a day?
Add water to there food for hydration.
I will also add different things through out the week.
Left over chicken ,hotdog, boiled egg, yogurt, bacon grease.
I have had the best luck with potato based foods, I have found they can eat more with out getting the runs.
Taste of the wild, wetlands, is the best stuff I have come across lately. I mix it with pro plan, since my dogs like the taste of pro plan better, but have found feeding it straight leads to too many complications due to the heavy corn.
Dog sled guys add chicken fat and other things.
Make sure she is up to date on all of her deworming.
Also common are tick related diseases and thyroid issues, in hounds. Typically though this will show up in the dogs performance in the field.

I would disagree with this, yes they burn more cals due to there age, but being underweight isn't healthy long term for any hunting dog regardless of age. I do agree with your statement that it is harder to keep weight on younger dogs

I feed twice a day, and try to stick in beef broth or an egg at least every other day. She is also wormed once a month. As far as I'm concerned I hope she is just a late bloomer. I sure would like pups out of her.

She's not coming into heat most likely because of her negative energy situatlon. Try feeding a bag of Purina Pro Plan Performance Sport 30/20 to her and deworming her with Panacur or SafeGuard monthly.

I'll be surprised if she doesn't start gaining weight and come into heat in the next 6 months. I'm not a huge Purina fan , but this formula is done right and works! Dogs really like it too.

1st thing pick a dog food and stick with it, it takes six months for a dogs metabelisim to change. Some dogs are hard to keep weight on at this age, but with the right dog food you shouldn't have to add anything to there diet. It is normal for females to not come in heat till they are a yr and a half. Once she comes in the 1st time then she should come in every 8 months ( this is a normal heat cycle). Some dogs come in every 6 months and some every 12. The ones that come in with no set time are usally hard to get bred, due to a chemical imbalance.

.

I have a female that didn't come into heat until she was 16 months old and she was in good shape and like you I was getting concerned. She is now 24 months old and just went through her second heat cycle last month. Great that your aware of what your dog is doing but it could be completely normal also.
The really skinny part would give me some concern. I just had a couple females that were very thin built but when I think skinny I think hip bones showing. Dogs all have different builds but I feel the condition around the hip area tells you a lot about the nutrition they are getting.

I have an older female that comes in once a year which I think is great.

Good luck with her.

No way I would worm a dog once a month a dose of poison every month could be her problem
