Question running sqrll dog with leaves on

My first pair of curs. Does it hurt to run them with leaves on they can't see the squrille to timber it. Will that mess them later or is the woods time good for them?

I try to take mine hunting with the leaves on every once and a while. Guess it just depends on the dog. Are these dogs that still need work, or are they more old broke dogs? The older broke dogs, we coon hunt them when the leaves are on. It's easyer to see eyes shinning back but I have a little gyp that still needs started well and we prolly won't start coon hunting her till she can do it on a regular basis on squirrel.

I wouldn't be so worried about the timbering right now cause if they got it in them to timber, they will. I think a good dog that timbers just doesn't use there eyes. My dog will listen, if she hears leaves movin or nails on wood it really gets her goin.

Leaves don't hurt anything as far as the dog is concerned and dogs don't learn anything sitting in a pen.

If you want good dogs you have to hunt them year-round

any time in the woods is good time, and too have excellent dogs they have to be in the woods, JT its just that some peoples definition of good is different, but a dog that is hunted year around is usually going to be better than one that sat in the pen for half the year

You're buying the feed, hunt them when and how you want to!

I personally will not hunt my young dogs in the summer it seems to cause them to be loose on the tree later on. It don't hurt a squirrel dog to lay them up in the summer. At least with my stephens curs anyway. They pick right back up in the fall.

If you hunt a Sq dog with the leaves on you better be ready to tie it up when it trees or you will make a young Sq dog loose on tree now it might not hurt a tree dog to me there is a lot different in a Sq dog and a tree dog this is just my opinion and what I have saw in 68 years.

I will hunt a young dog on squirrel with the leaves on but I do it sparingly. One reason is that I can't be positive the dog has the right tree. I can't usually gauge if the dog has a squirrel, is slick, or has a good excuse. I want the dog to continue to learn and stay in shape. But I also want to know that the dog is right.
