Why we do the things we do sometimes

You have to ask yourself sometimes why do you do stupid things. Most of the time you ask them after the fact. I am positive I made a post on here the second night I took Batman out, it was with Rampage. It was the first coon he treed I saw. I do remember that. And after that horrible night I had with him last night I figured I needed to give Rampage a round. Well my wife tells me all the time I spoil Bat and tonight was no different. When I went to load Rampage I just couldn't leave Bat so I loaded him also. I was in the woods right at dusk and that moon was full. When I cut them and both left out of there kicking leaves in the opposite direction I knew I was in trouble. Bat was 850 yards at his deepest point before he made his circle. he was pretty much contained by the river the way he went. Rampage was 650 the way he went before he started working back.

The almost got back to me at the same time and went almost opposite directions again. I could tell Bat hit a track at 350 that time. Rampage was about 250 in a bad swampy cutover the other way. Bat lined out and at a little over 940 he treed. I saw Rampage coming in and thought he was going to him so I started to Bat only to find that beavers had flooded off my access and I had to come out and drive around to get to him. I looked for Rampage and he was working up a creek away from both of us.

I had to drive around about 3 miles to get back around to Bat and this took a bout 45 mins and Rampage had got treed during this time. I went on in to Bat and found the coon and took some pics. Loaded up Bat and came back out and started around to where I could go to Rampage. Stupid mistake again on my part. It was rough as crap going in to Rampage so I let Bat off the bed of the ATV figuring he would head in ahead of me. I get to Rampage and no Bat. I find his coon and Bat is 700 yds down the creek treed again. But again on the flooded side of the property so I have to go out again. Rampage hears him and takes off to him though.

I have to drive around again and they have Bat's second coon of the night treed. I will say for as stupid as Bat was last night he was on a rail tonight. But I won't make the mistake of taking those two together anytime soon. LOL

LOL....yeah, these dogs can sure add a lot of extra time to your planned hunts.

Some guys have all the fun.. U sir are lucky and fortunate in several ways.. enjoy..

I had a hunt like that a time or two.
Worst one was with Boone & Abby in the Mississippi bottoms. Both came treed at the same time... On opposite sides of the river. 22 miles to the nearest bridge.
It was a long night.

PS: both had their coon.

All We Know Is All We Are

I live right off a pretty good size river here. Luckily I haven't had but one dog swim across the river. My Grizz dog swam across it opening night after one about 6 years ago. He was about 6 miles upriver from the boat landing and 2-3 miles from the nearest road across the river.

I had to go home and get my boat and go upriver and get him and the coon.

This year when the river was flooding I was hunting these same two dogs and Rampage followed a coon out on the rocks much farther upriver than where I live. The river is much swifter and the banks are extremely steep and rough. He was swept almost a half mile downriver before luckily being able to get out on the same side I was on.

I don't like them getting in the rivers at all.

sounds like some great dogs you have right there...are they tough enough to kill a big coon alone? I am asking because it seems they would make some awesome hog dogs...that is about how I know if the tree dog will bay and try to stop a boar hog...

Years ago I created a bloodline of Texas Smoke and Kemmers gold Nugget mt curs for hog hunting most of them hunted just about how your 2 dogs hunt except they were bred strictly hog...

About what is the average weight on these 2 dogs? some of todays mt curs seem to be too small for what I need but these seem to be of good size...

Training dogs is not so much about quantity, it's more about timing, and the right situations...After that it's up to the dog....A hunting dog is born...

The top dogs male grandparents were both excellent kill dogs even though I try not to ever bring them out alive. In fact one time one of them went to a couple guys and run in on a coon and they said I have never seen a dog kill a coon that quick. All we saw was a little black streak and that coon was dead.

They were hunting hounds and had never seen a cur work before. I had one recently that didn't make it as a coon dog that was double bred on my Grizz dog which is the Batman dogs grandparent on one side. He is a top hog dog for Corey Heaton in SC. I also have dogs out of him on lions and bears in Utah, and cats in Pa.
