Possum track????
What is the longest you have ever seen a possum run before he finally treed???? Thanks in advance for any info.
They run???
Lol I can't resist few months ago my pup struck in the timber an worked it into milo stalks I thought she was really gaining ground on a coon an I heard something movin through the stalks ahead of her and it was a oppossum before i could shock her she caught it I corrected her an walked out the garmin said that track was 430 yards
really never had one run my old trashy dogs would just bump one . never trailed just treed them .

I turned my pup and old dog out one night. Pup strikes a red hot track and takes off outta there. Old dog jumps back in truck lol. Pup blisters that thing 300 yards and bam. Treed solid as a rock. I already knew what it was though. Was a black possum. Heck if they all did like that. I wouldn't mind treeing em

Haha that's good stuff right there! And it hard to be mad when they sound good doin it lol
I didnt whoop her lol. I also saw the same pup winding getting her outta the box. Cut loose she ran straight to a tree 200 yards away and fell treed on coon.. Thats about the only 2 times I liked her

LoL.Last time he treed a possum he was deep and alone.I had to cross 3 hills to get to the sorry joker. He trees plenty of coons so I'll fix him later.
Thanks for your honesty fellas...I don't feel so bad now!!! Saturday night we had what started out sounding like some excellent dog work on a long winded coon. When you guys say "it sure sounded good" I get exactly what you are saying!!!
Young dogs, broke off of fast game, we really don't have too many possums around here...they went like 900 yards on the Garmin. Locked up treed and it took us about 40 minutes to get to them. We walk in expecting to see a big tree with a big fat coon in it and nope!!!!! The dogs are treed up a ratty little gum tree with the biggest moon rat I have ever seen. Looked like 20 pounds worth.
They ran the track good and we listened as they ran the track out, located and locked up. The dogs never had time to switch over and it sounded so good. Even though it was a long track for this neck of the woods the thought of stopping them with the Alpha never entered my mind.
Now in this area we might have a coon that runs more than 100 yards once or twice a year...and I don't remember ever having a possum run much at all. The dogs always just kind of popped one up. Opened real loud like it was red hot and fell treed almost immediately. Very surprising for me!!! I never realized a possum's eyes glow as bright as they do either...
my pack of trash runners ran one for an hour one night. i thought they werer running a fox as that's what they usually do and then they treed a long ways off. i went to it and behold, a possum. i didn't think they would go that far that fast. at least it wasn't far off a logging road. as a reward for having run it so far, i let them have it since it up a little sappling and all i had to do was shake it. then again, maybe they lost the fox and stumbled onto the possum.

See not all possum dogs are hot nosed.lol
I am not saying it cannot happen, but I never much bought into the old track switching theory...
Without exception, every time I ever saw when it was supposed to have happened it was always the same scenario. One guys dog strikes a track {this dog is almost always a redbone or bluetick!!!} and moves out with it. The other guys dog {this dog is almost always a high bred up walker} , for whatever reason, is seriously sucking hind teat on this track. He just cannot keep up with the first dog and many times he is as jealous as his owner and wont even tree. The first dog trees and has a coon and the second guy, rather than admit the first one has more better dog power, but mostly just because his walker got the tar knocked out of him, simply blames the dog for "switching tracks." I mean after all, we cant have an off color dog burn up a slick treer.
So if I get this right...dog A jumped a deer and blasted it right on out. Dog B tried to keep up and even barked some on the track, but he knew it was wrong. Dog A at some point is soon satisfied with his deer chase. Coincidently, there happens to be a red hot coon he can pop up at precisely the point he gets over the deer. Dog A trees this ever so convenient coon while dog B {obviously the smarter of the two} realized all along this was no coon and refuses to honor that lying no good dog A.
It's funny to me how excuses work...I been at this since 77' and never heard of a dog switching tracks until somewhere around the mid to late 80"s. It was sort of a fad at first with a lot of guys even taking credit for their dogs doing it...I guess it's like bigfoot...you cant dispute what you cant prove. Maybe my dog switched tracks Saturday night, but since she didn't actually tree a coon [which is of course what they always switch over to!!!} I cant take the credit for it. HAHA
Edit: "my pack of trash runners ran one for an hour one night"
Ya gotta love and respect a man that is honest right off the bat!!!!!
thanking that most of these dogs are running something else maybe? then coming across possum? just my uneducated guess...........

really? actually my dogs were running a fox and the fox put it on my dogs bad. then as they were wondering around trying to find their way back they stumbled on a dumb possum. they couldn't believe theeir good luck. and it's all good to me.

last possum my dog treed i pulled him off, crossed a field and sent him into another section. Turned around and shinned eyes about 50 yrds away from the possums tree. walked back and a nice coon layin up.
i think alot of the time theyre on a coon or whatever else and come across the possum.
