It's that time of year again

Well as every April 15th approaches realization that my dog running is over for 3 months is one of the worst parts of my year.

I ended my running season upon trying to cut the dog off from a swamp that has dangerously high water levels. There is nothing quite like the cold rush of water hitting your cheeks and running into your hip boots. Definitely not the best note to end on.

I really do hate April in Michigan!

Least you don't have to swim with cottonmouth.

Why can't you hunt? I did when I lived there cause Michigan had a damage control law.

Time mostly, from 1977 to 1996, I worked 7 days a week. Since 1996, I have been raising 3 sons. I don't live in a rural area so I have to travel 45 minutes to an hour to hunt state land. I have taken days off to ask for permission on several occasions, but I must come across as a 15 year old boy asking the Homecoming Queen out. I have only ever received permission from 2 farmers in the last 30 some years

One day I took the boys with me, and we asked over 6 farmers. We were told no by all of them. The next year a buddy goes out and asks the same farmers, and he got permission from every single one of them.

I wish I could figure it out.

Pretend like your applying for a job. Field and stream have written articles about that. There is a way to approach it and a way not to. Most of the time before someone will write you a full permit they need to know you on a close to personal level. Dress nice ask them if they will let you hunt it ONE night. Then take it from there. Driving up to someone's house and asking them for a year permit is not the way to go. Read one of those articles it will help you. I have made my living in sales my hole life. I never give a price until the person is ready to buy. Hope this helps some.

Larry

I have over 150 farms in michigan I can hunt I have farmers call me and ask me to come and do damage control. I have found if you stop and talk to them and not just ask for permission to hunt until just before you are leavening most of them will let you, if i'm driving down the road and see one planting and filling his planter or doing something close to the road I will stop and talk to him and help him a little, heck one of the farmers was hurt in a accident and we cut his fire wood for him for the winter, one thing about farmers they are close nit with each other you do one or two right and the word will get around faster then lightning .

and I drive 1 1/2 or more to hunt every night that I hunt some nights during kill season I may drive father then that you just hunt longer, I just hope I can start hunting again soon.
