How many of your dogs can Rig Coon?

Ive had mine strike from the box but I dont care to rig hunt in todays time. Gas is too high and I want my dog to be out of my site at all times. I dont know for a fact if it will mess with them but I'd just rather not do it.

my buddy has a walker that will start whinning when she winds something from the box. at first we thought she had to pee or something so we let her out and she took off a treed.

A lot of guys rig, that have lots of big woods and thin coon.

Love it amazing where you will strike coon tree d a many coon on rigs easy to start pups with it BUT it will make your rig dog lazy on free casting so if you want to dable with rigging make sure you do both just about ruined my dog took about 3 months of A woopins to get gone again

Both of mine will rig, I have a rig box but don't normally just ride around all night looking for a hot rig. If I'm driving into a drop and drive over a track I will turn loose on it and then go down and make my drop. I've had a couple times where I did not turn loose on the rig and went on down the road to make my drop and the dogs end up hitting the track and running it across the road where they struck it from the truck. Most of my hunting is huge tracts of national forest, the biggest positive for me is being able to take my 3 year old son along and have him be able to hear a chase and usually a quick tree without making him walk too terribly far in some rough country.

Pretty much have always rigged, started out hunting with older hunters, now I am one. I hunt large hunting clubs and state land with spread out coon. I like the control of when and where I can turn loose on a strike. We don't have small wood lots with lots of coon to hunt. Our dogs when they strike and let them down will circle to find track, if they can't get the track going will come back and jump back up on the rig box and off we go. Most trees are 100-300 yards from the truck. It has made most of our dogs useless for free casting, but don't comp hunt so not an issue with me. Have had two cur dogs that we trained to rig squirrels.

Had a Black Mouth and a Leopard that rigged squirrels, squirrels didn't have much of a chance. I have a nice young Mountain Cur that is doing a nice job on squirrels and treed his first wild coon at night last week by himself. The week before he treed a coon in the morning while squirrel hunting. Will start rigging him as soon as he gets more experience in the coon woods.

One of best dogs I've ever owned was a heck of a rigg dog. He'd rigg bear or coon either one. He was a natural he knew he was to run bear in the day and coon at night. I'd give my right arm to have him and another like him back now I could make a real pack of bear dogs! He had a super nose and could rigg a bear going down the road at 45mph. You could tell by his bark Wether it was a bear or coon by his bark and actions. Yea I think you'd like a rigg dog! I have a young dog just started good and I'm gonna try and teach him to rigg this summer but only on bear. I've got the best COON DOG I'll ever own now and don't need another when he's gone I'm done coon hunting only bear after that

Well you can still teach em to rigg coons can't you! I wasn't telling you to run bear but train yor dog to do coons. I'd rather have one to rigg and free cast too. As far as not being able to run bear there that's too bad

here is one week end of rigging, it is a lot of fun I have trained 2 other dogs to rig, everyone that I have had you could rig them or free cast them.

I think you should try it open up alot of different hunting especially if you have a lot of coons

We dont have many...

We don't have a real thick population either, especially up in the mtns but I can usually manage to rig 4-6 good tracks in a good night and even on a bad can usually find one. The worst thing here is having a dog you trust to put down that you know for sure isn't hitting a bear track.

i love to rig hunt. got 2 dogs that are awesome rig dogs and broke as they get. (10 and 11 years old). leave their holes open every night take them and have tested them in snow and soil can see tracks time after time and both are spot on.

most the time cant turn loose because of most ground here private but when can its fun. get plenty strikes where gonna hunt anyway. i still mix it up with mostly freecasting, rigging, and little roading. doing the same kinda hunting everytime gets boring for me.

a real deal trash broke rig dog is priceless. ive had plenty that strike anything hot, but mostly trash. LOL.

like was said before the funnest rig hunting with good dogs is taking kids, family, or friends that arent hardcore into hound hunting but when strike and run track right from vehicle theres so much action they can really get into hunt with less waiting, and humping it long distances.
