Been running my Setter every evening for the last two weeks. Have been birds trickling through. Usually point a few in an hour or so. The big wave of birds hasn't been through this area yet. Fun spring sport...I love it. What I don't love is the fact I picked 18 deer ticks off my dog last Friday. That's bad.

It's called a woodcock. They are game birds. There is a season on them.

looks like a woodcock !

They are great birds to work young dogs on because they are more tolerant of dogs making mistakes crowding them than say a grouse would. Last spring I could point 15 in an hour at the peak. Taking first part of next week off to run all day. Our training season goes out on the 15th.

I have'em in my back yard every night I come home with the hounds. The property out back is wet enough we have them all summer long.

They make a funny buzz noise. Believe it or not I have a female bluetick that will run them...saw her do it one night in a cut over bean field this past fall...couldn't believe it. The little bird would run a ways and when she got too close he would fly and land about 50 feet away...she would circle until she picked it up again and run some more. I would have laughed at some one telling this story, until I saw it.

Like reading the bird hunting stories and pics ... my daddy and grandpa were both avid bird hunters . Around here it is mainly quail unless you head north or west into KS for pheasant . Quail population isn't what it used to be . Some how I end up married to to coon hunter - had no idea what I was getting myself into 20 some years ago lol .

Todd , do you know my neighbor Skip Bond he is big into bird hunting and the comp side of it .

Here is a recipe for you guys , I don't measure anything but it is pretty self explanatory .
Quail Pot Pie (works with just about any bird)
Bring stock pot of water (salted/peppered with a little chicken boullion) and clean birds to boil , reduce heat let simmer till meat is falling off the bone . Remove all bones and skin . Put meat back into pot add diced veggies , potatoes , carrots , celery , corn , onion and peas (whatever you like) . Simmer until vegetables are tender . In cup of cold water add 3-4 TBLS corn starch stir until dissolved then add to stock pot stir to thicken (about like a thin gravy you can add more if needed but always mix in cold water then add to simmering broth stirring as you go for no lumps)
Spray a large glass dish with non-stick spray pour mixture into dish and top with home made un-cooked biscuits . You can use canned or Bisquick . Bake in oven @ 425 unti biscuits are golden brown . Brush tops w/ butter .

they must have awful smell -dogs will point them --most bird dogs hate to pick one up--- U have to really make them retrieve them
