Can a dog sit up to long?

I was just wondering if a dog can sit up to long. I got a dog from a friend that was a good one but he sat up for almost a whole year. I've hunted him about 4 nights and he hasn't treed coon yet. Just dens and slick trees so I was just wondering if he's rusty or just sat up to long?

I suppose it's possible for a dog to go bad like that but I doubt it. If he really was any good before he was layed up I'd give him a few more nights before you get excited. Four nights to shake off the rust might seem a little much but who knows maybe he needed two or three nights then you just happened to hunt on one or two really bad nights.

If a guy or gal goes to the gym 3-4-5 days a week for 2 years and is in great condition and is good at sports,, then they sit in a chair for a year, after this they walk back into the gym,,,, with only 4 trips back, will they be in the same condition and play sports with the same proficiency? This reminds me of a joke Jim made once,, if dogs could cull handlers,, I think there are times we expect to much from our dogs,

The first dog I ever owned had been laid up for two yrs or so and the first night I turned her loose she treed a coon. She was an older true "coondog" though before I got her. Any dog will get out of shape physically from being laid up but I think how they hunt depends on what they were doing before they got laid up. If your dog was a good dog before, I would think it would come back around pretty quick.

I'll find out too, I just picked up a walker/btick cross that hasn't been ran in 2 years and before he was layed up he was straight shootin on coon. the guy lost time to hunt and moved into town and couldnt keep him in town so i took him. The guy said i can try him out and if i like him to keep him if not to bring him back.

What I'm thinking is sure the dog has the knowledge and probably the desire, but for treeing on dens in the beginning is more normal if they don't have their track speed back. This would come from physical conditioning and may take a little time, When was said,,, "I've hunted him about 4 nights" and not said, I had him out Four times for a couple hours each, I take this as 2 maybe and the other a 15 minute drop. I broke my leg 2 years ago and they had to drill a hole in my knee and insert a titanium rod inside the bone and pni it off, I had to sit the chair for around 6-7 months, before this I was a steady 4-5 days a week gym guy, It took me going 25 days a month for 6-7 months to get back where I felt good again, I'm sure dogs and humans are different, but for me, it was a day for a day thing.

I tend to think whenever I get a new dog, I need to hunt him 20 to 30 nights solid. Then ill have an idea of what I'm working with. Idk that's just me.

A coon dog ida coon dog no matter how long they sit up !!! They don't forget they don't loose desire !!! They might not be in as good of shape but a dog doesn't forget how to tree a coon !!!! The stock of dogs I hunt are the same dog if they sit one night or a year!!!!

I thought they just sat up til they got tired then lay down. I never saw that one coming.

Coon dog

I'd think a coon dog is a coon dog. The shape they're in shouldn't have much to do with treeing a coon or not. Coons aren't known for superior track speed !!

My buddy had a female a nice hound she sat for three trs i went over to his house cause i had a pup no old dog took her out in december wham bam tree singles. some the good ones it doesnt matter.

You can't rate a dog that was some one else's dog on a few trips to the woods a lot comes into play !! But a coon dog is a coon dog !! Give him sometime to warm up to you if a dog doesn't trust you he won't work for you !!!! Jmo so put some time in him and some are one owner dogs etc,,, every dog is different the way they react To diff situations
