How much time would you give one

I have a young pup I call Panic,10 months old,UKC and PKC SS.hunts spring that continues to be very stubborn on getting his mouth open on track. His back round has hounds that gave alot of mouth and are open trailors on track but for some reason this one is way different. He's been treeing solo since 6 months old,accurate and will stay hooked till you get to him.Here's what I know for sure. He's wide open on a hot deer chases, flat out smoke one,he has been hunted with another hound 2 times,first time he babbled behind the other dog when cut loose. Second time he didn't.He has been hunted mostly by hisself,maybe 20 or so nites total which I know isn't alot. The last four times he has been cut into the timber,in a total of 43 minutes,from time cut to he's gotten treed he has treed 4 times. 1 in a bunch of grapevines that went everywhere,no coon seen,2 trees with coon lookin down and 1 den. Furthest away from where he got turned loose and got treed was 409 yards.With that being said,he never opened on any of the tracks before he's gotten treed. To date,he has treed 24 times and has only opened up a total of maybe 20 times on the ground. 4 of those 20 total track barks came when I cut a coon loose and gave it some time and let him run a hot track to see how he would open on it. Ran the track 385 yards into the timber,opened up 4 times!!From my past experiences,they get tighter on the ground with age most of the time. This young blue has some real tools between his ears,how long would you give him to start opening up more on track? I myself like a young hound to open when he smells a coon track,doesn't need to open every step he takes,bootick in it but at least open here and there some! How much time would you give'em??I'm runnin out of patience with him!!Thanks in advance,Danny G.

Sounds like one that i would give about 15 years.
Try him where theres a lot of standing water, sometimes that gets em useing their mouth more.

4 barks in 385 yards sounds about right to me. MOVE that track before you start babbling about it. LOL But to your question. A 10 month old can change a LOT. Depends on how bad you hate it. He may start opening later on. I had a dog that at 10 months old had only treed one time. Total. By 18 months old he treed about 110 or 120 barks per minute.

Not any standing water to hunt around me. Creek bottoms is all I have. Last nite I cut him 3 times in a place where the multiflower rose and grapvines are thick and coon go under it alot as they travel hoping he would hit a good track and get in the mess and struggle to get thru it and open some. Didn't happen. He's just a blast to hunt,just not quite what I look for in a pup his age. Most open to much! Lot's of bootick'in,not this one! Thanks,Danny G.

sounds like my kinda dog the less the bark quicker they get it tree im gettin old can't go like i use ta go but im a pleasure hunter not a competion hunter

Im like you. I doubt he ever opens like your gonna want him to. Ive never saw one just one day start being open on track. Lots of folks like a tight mouth dog though. He should sale quick.

I have started and trained many of pups,none which has been like this one from pretty much the same linage as he is. I know when I campaigned his grand sire,Jet 8 and his sire,Gauge in the hunts,lots of times that quick strike dog had an advantage in a cast of hounds with equal ability to get struck and treed wether of by themselves or treed together during the hunt. Seen it during the purina race in 2006 with Jet 8.Both his grand sire and sire are the same way. They're both quick to get open but not babblers and got treed. Can't stand a babbling idiot and won't pitch a hound on a strike in a hunt. One has to have it in him to do so,strike and tree for me to pack one to the hunts. Different in PKC compared to UKC. I believe this young one has it in him to compete for the baby stakes in April right now.If I put this young hound in a ukc hunt around here and I have to strike and tree him on his locate a few times,wouldn't take long for the guys in the cast to send me off back to the truck for hunting a silent hound. He's not totally silent but close.This young one gets treed pretty quick for his age and accurate but I have that gut feeling he's always going to be tight on the ground.Hope I'm wrong!!Thanks for the opinions,Danny G.

Danny give him so more time,he is young and still figuring things out. I sold a pup that was a great grand pup of Jet 4 that was silent by himself but opened great when hunted wuth company i have no idea why just the way he was.
OF course if you cant put up with it you can always send him to Canada or Vermont.lol

Walk him on a lead through the woods till he strikes one, when he starts get worked up pet and praise him like you would a pup treeing for the first time. Once he starts barking and carrying on praise him some more. Then cut him.

Your basically doing a caged coon session on the ground with out the coon. Just red hot scent. If you wanted to control the situation a little more you could have a caged coon there and released minutes before bring him into the woods.

Dogs bark out of excitement, your creating excitement around the track and scent not just the tree I have had lots of luck doing this. Most of the pups I have trained started tight and around a year old, start to open more.

Give him some time I'm sure he will come around.

Teach him to speak using treats and feeding times as well, then every time you feed him get him to bark first. I have heard of this working on dogs that wouldn't bark because of someone over doing it with a bark collar.

Sounds like a smart coondog!I got one that barks too much on track.Drives me nuts!

Not lookin to sell as of now!

He's the only one I have at the kennel that I'm putting my time in! One that has the tools also needs the time in the timber. That's why I sold the rest and kept this one. He's sure enough a coon tree'r, just not quite my style as of now. Thanks to all for the imput,most of the time one can always gain some useful tool from this message board as I have in the past. For now,I'll continue to hunt him and see how things go!One thing I really like about him is the fact that he eliminates all the bootick'n most blues do on a track barkin way to much and goin nowheres. He does one thing I like alot,gets treed but a bark here or there would not dissapoint me at this time!!He's still young,Maybe he'll change with some age!! Time will tell! Thanks,Danny G.

A silent or semi silent dog can win here. We dont have no coon much. Dont need all those strike points. Matter of fact. Best blue dog I ever hunted with was pretty silent then as she got old went completely silent almost. Was deadly accurate. Ive saw her running behind a coon and not even be barking. When she parked it she had a coon but was as timid a dog as I ever saw to.

Danny, I'd give up & move on!!! How much you want for him? Shoot, I just remembered, you said he wasn't for sale yet. Just playin' with ya.

I bought a super sweet little female 2 years ago out of Brummy in Georgia that is the same way. Probably heard about 10 barks in 2 yrs. of hunting on the ground. Always thought standing corn or thick timber would get her to open more, but never happened. My situation is different because mine is a female. I breed her 3 weeks ago to Appels' dual GR Jet dog to get an open mouth pup (I hope). Jake assures me most will be open!!!! Loaded with Jet dogs plus Boomer, so maybe they will open more.

Like was said before, 'the older they get the tighter they get', so good luck in getting him to open more. Take care, Ron.

If he gets the job done in the woods I would just be happy to have a pup doing it alone. I like to hear an ol brawl mouth dog running track but the best blue tick I have ever seen was stone cold silent on the ground. He would just creep around and tree coon all night.
