Puppy kennel barking
I have a 16 week old puppy, ever since she was little she has barked in the kennel and I live in town so it's a big problem. When she was little I opened her kennel up and let her run loose in my fenced in back yard and she doesnt say a word. I am now wanting to start kenneling her up but she barks bad enough that I just give in. I had a bark collar on her and she was just barking through it. Maybe someone has some advise or some reasoning as to why this is.
Thanks for any answers or help, and no this isn't ny first time owning a dog or a barker...

Brian the pup is training you. You have to make it so she gives in. You put a Dogtra bark collar on the pup and I guarantee she will not bark through it.
Brian and please don't think I am talking to you now but to the the people that read this. As I have seen you on the boards enough to know you take care of your pups and dogs.
Dogs generally bark because they need something. Food, Water, attention, out of their cage, pen, etc.
I never would recommend putting a bark collar on a puppy and throwing it in a pen and just seeing it 10 minutes a day.
I would recommend however if you have a pup and your playing with it some, letting it run in a yard some and taking good care of it. That when you put it in its pen and it barks that has to be stopped right away. A dogtra ys500 set on 3 should solve your problems. If you teach the pup now that you won't put up with the barking, life will be better down the road.
BARKING PUP
We have given ours Old Boots (No Shoe Laces). Just to have something to play with. Or a friend.

Brian,
My female pup does the same thing she ran loose until she was 6 mos old and when I locked her up constant barking.
1st night we took her out I figured she would hang around like most pups do, She surprised me and took off and ran and treed on all 3 trees, 2nd she did the same, 3rd night she treed 2 solo.
I think these young kennel barkers have a extra gear and need more exercise to burn that energy. I bought the Dogtra rechargable bark collar and it is works good. But in the last few weeks that we have been pushing her hard I have not had to use the collar.
Good luck with her!
Young pups do much better in a puppy pen with other pups.
Pups outside and neighborhoods don't mix.
The earliest I would put a bark collar on a pup is 5 months , they say it should be 6. There brains aren't developed enough until then.
You could have saved yourself a bunch of head aches by doing some studying before getting a pup, and having a plan in place. I take it you know that now
The worst part about this situation is that this is now effecting how you look at your pup. Resentment will ruin your relationship with that dog which means its pretty much doomed for failure before it even hits the woods.
You have a couple options, one would to be start bringing it in the house until it's old enough to wear a bark collar and be kennel broke.
You could ship it off to a training facility where they can start her for you and get her kennel broke. If you have the money to spend I would recommend this route.
You will get a much needed break, and the pup will be a lot more enjoyable when she gets back home.
You could let her run in the yard all day and night letting her sleep where she chooses. You could try tying her out on a chain, however if she isn't chain broke this could have the opposite effects.
Be creative try different things until you find something that works. She pry just needs more exercise and or another pup to play with. Even then they will bark some when playing.
Here is thread I started focusing on trading a coonhound in an surbaban environment. Keeping them inside while there young transition them outside as they mature.

Best of luck pm if you have any more questions I will be happy to help

Thanks for posting guys all good info. Bruce I put the dogtra 300 on her I have a 500 also, but figured the 300 would work... It didn't but I do agree with you. That she is traininh me and she's getting her way... And at some point she's going to have to be kenneled and it will be a fight lol... I have toys in there for her, a radio, old shoe, and have spent more time with her then I have any other pup... I actually really like her other then this... It's nice to know others have or are going through something similar

Fisher13 thanks for your insight. I feel raiseing a pup or two in town isn't ideal but is very do able. I say that as I have plenty of experience first hand doing it. Thanks for you opinion on the bark callar and options...she's running loose day and night right now and is fine for now.

The time to break them of barking just to be barking is when they are young as I'm sure you know.I had one that started it for no reason all of a sudden,When the garden hose and me telling her to stop never work.I put my dogtra ys500 on her and turned it to 3.She just barked though it so i went ahead and turned it all the way up to 7.She tried to bark one time after that and found out it never felt good.I left it on her for 2 days straight took it off and she hasn't barked since.Unless someone of something comes in the yard that she don't know.Which that is fine with me.I can't stand a dog that barks to just be barking.I can put up with almost anything else but one that won't stop barking for no reason don't live here or anywhere else.
How old was your pup when you applied the bark collar?

Brain, I dont know what all you have done with the pup but if you are ok with her running loose for a few more weeks I would try some different training. Teach her to lead, load, come, stay and all of the rest of it. After she figures out you are the boss on everything else she should be more responsive to SHUT UP! It has worked for me in the past.

When you said the Dogtra 300 didn't work, could you describe what you meant. What was her reaction to it.

That is hard to remember but I would say around 5 months.
First of all, even though I live on 6 acres in a rural area. I am not having a barking dog on my place. I use to live in a large city and barking dogs is something you just can't put up with and I won't. I get guys come over and want to work a pup on a cage coon at my place. I just won't do it even though I have the room. I am never going to encourage a dog to bark at my house.
A lot of things come into play that we don't discuss when talking about Stimulation Collars.
1. I never use one on a dog that is kenneled with another dog. A lot of times the dog thinks the other dog is the one handing out the punishment and things get ugly.
2. Lower settings usually are more effective than higher settings. When dealing with a pup I would use the lower setting possible for more than one reason. On grown dogs I put the Dogtra on 4 and they don't bark but once or twice.
3. You have a pup barking for no good reason, I would put the Dogtra 500 on it and set it to 2 at first. Walk away backwards if you have to and see the response of the pup has when it barks and is stimulated. If it is a crazy pup and doesn't understand that being quiet in the kennel is the correct thing to do you may have your hands full.
4. One of the top 10 questions on this board is "How do I get my Dogs Voice back" We have way too many dogs being neglected and left to bark all day and night, only to loose its voice. Yes read this and get mad at me, but if you let your dog bark its voice out in the pen, I am not sure you are doing the right thing with your dog.
5. Never Ever put a bark collar on so tight you dogs develops sores on its neck.
6. Don't put the collar on too loose and say it doesn't work. It is you not the collar.
7. These dogs will trick you. A dog trained with a bark collar sometimes will squall like it is being shocked when you walk to the pen and it is excited. You will think it is not working and giving a false shock. I have one female that will squall her first bark like she is getting shocked when your let her out of the pen. The bark collar on her is dead. If I had a charged collar on here I would swear it was shocking her.
8. A lot of dogs will learn to change their voice to one that won't set off the collar. I have one like that now, then if she sees me outside in the evening she will whine a little. I can live with that. It also has never affected her mouth in the woods. Deep loud male dog mouth.
9. Once you get one quiet, you can replace the bark collar with a small block of wood on a collar.
Some good stuff here guys. Bruce she would bark through the 300 n just keep barking while getting shocked, I would say more she doesn't understand why she is getting shocked.

Weather is warm enough now I would run a water hose out to the kennel. When she barks go out and spray her down telling her quiet or shut up till she goes in her house. Dogs like water and will swim in it but they don't like getting sprayed with it. Will only take a few rounds.

Shut Up?
I never use 2 or more word commands. I word commands, "No" is the biggest. Come, load, sit. Using combination words is confusing to a pup. When they feel a negative response and here NO first then they will pick up on that quicker.
I don't have a lot of neighbors and I generally let my hounds bark. But when I say no they understand.

I have had 100 percent luck stoping a dog from barking in pen, first they need excersise, food, water, and a dry place to lay down, first I go out and yell at them, if that don't work I go out with a switch, then a tobacco stick, then a rifle, in that order.

The best method I have found is to put your pup in a small kennel like 5 feet by 12 feet. get an old (or new) shower head and mount it on top of the fence where it will cover the entire kennel when it sprays. Connect the shower head to a dishwasher or washing machine solenoid valve. Run an extension cord from the solenoid through a window into your house. Every time your pup barks, plug in the extension cord. I have had great success with this method.

Where starting to get some creative ones now..... I haven't put her in the kennel just letting her run loose in the back yard.. I'm thinking in going to let her get a little older so she can understand a bark collar easier...

Certain lines are bad about kennel barking, You may have mentioned lines I didnt see. SOme Harry lines are terrible Timothy will be the first to tell you some are not for everyone. I have had several out of sweat it and trackman would never stop. Had one out of sweat it we called electro man two coolars and would still bark. Some are beyond breaking.
