At what age do u wean your pups

I got a large litter here an I think 4 weeks is coming up this week end an that might be the end of sucking on momma

5 to 6 weeks

4 weeks is too young. But, Introduce them to pup chow (soak a few minutes in warm water). Once or twice a day. We have started pups with Oatmeal or grits for about a week then pup chow.

you can always get some goat replacement milk from the local feed store and supplement it to help out momma. that's how I get them to start eating solid food by mixing it with the milk. they like it better than water mixing at that young age. For my rule of thumb, I wean when momma thinks it is time. how's that saying go? Momma knows best....lol

I let the dam tell me. Watch her face when they start suckling. If she appears to not like it or she appears to be in pain then its time. Pups have razor blades for teeth at that age. 4 weeks is a little young. But you could do pup chow that's ground up and milk replacer mixed. That's what I've done and my in-law's do. Right about that age start introducing the pup chow and see how they react to it.

She might growl or start walking away or try to dislodge them. I soak pup kibble in water then stir it all into a slop and introduce the pups. Take the dam away so she doesn't eat it. Over time she will kick the pups off nursing and they will begin to eat more soft food.

I have a blender i picked up at yard sale for next to nothing. I use it to start them out on a thin mix of puppy chow and milk replacer. go easy on the milk replacer starting out because it will sometimes give them the scours.gradually make it thicker till they are eating good on thier own. They will suckle momma less with the solid food . Long story short lol, I start feeding them at about 4 weeks and normally they wean themselves in a weeks time.

that's about the way I do it but I start at three weeks and by five weeks they are starting to ween themselves . it sure helps the gyp out and she will maintain her weight and health very well . a lot of times I can plum pull the pups off momma at 5 weeks .

I would not wean a litter before 6 weeks old and 7 would be better. Get them started on puppy chow good and mix in a little milk replacer in that help your female.

Rance I grind up pup chow with power milk replacer and Coxey guard then soak it for a bit to let it swell and then ad more water. I don't want it swelling in their bellys. 4 weeks is a bit early bot maybe let the female have some and the pups can nurse when she is busy eatting. you might try clipping their toe nails also. Good luck

Thanks everyone. Her milk production is slowing way down an so is her interest. There's 11 of them an they are the biggest pups I've ever seen at this age

At 4 weeks they should have been eating soaked food 3x a day for the past week. I wean mine at 4 weeks, have for years, and have some of the biggest healthiest pups around, and momma's who don't look run into the ground or like they've had a million pups. They are back hunting hard by time pups are 8 weeks.

At 4 weeks I take them from momma, and let her come to nurse them 1-2 times a day (more for her than them) until 5 weeks. I feed them soaked food 3x a day and leave a bowl of dry food & water with them at all times.

I never raised many, only a handful of litters, but I have always weaned hound pups at 6 weeks old. by then the gyp has had about enough of those needle sharp teeth anyway

Take a cue from their mom, she knows best. I let them stay with mom 49 days. She will have them weaned by then. It's not good for the pups to take them away from her too soon, even if they're no longer nursing.

We usually start them on puppy chow as soon as they will eat it. Usually around 3 weeks.. We start taking them from mother during the day at 6 weeks and completely wean at 7 weeks.. I'd say 4 weeks is a little early..


We vaccinate 1 week after weaned and then again at 10-11 weeks

I am by no means a puppy raising expert, but I been around a few that claimed to be. This is what they did.....the litters I did raise I always fed the pups that Purina puppy chow with the white powder coating soaked in warm milk as soon as the pups could eat it. I gave them as much as they wanted, but kept them with the dam.
This does two things, gets the pups eating so they get more and gives the dam a little bit of a break. I always made the milk with powdered stuff. I really don't know why, that is just what the "experts" did. Never lost a coonhound puppy.
I was told that any breed of dogs that had big litters would benefit from doing it this way. Again, it gives the dam a little break from having to produce so much milk and having so much taken from her and it also helps her to dry up quicker.
