I hate swamp oaks!
Last night the dog ran a good track into a frozen swamp. I don't know about anyone else, but we have this variety of white oak called a swamp oak. These darn trees have branches from top to bottom. There are even a bunch of sucker type branches all around the darn trunk.
The dog treed on a small 30 foot oak last night. I walked around that darn tree 2 times, and was getting ready to send the dog on her way. Then I caught a slight glint, yep there the coon was only about 20 foot off the ground. I put my spot on it and could just barely see it still. I really hate these trees! I don't have a clue how I ever find the coon when the leaves are on because i can barely find them when there are no leaves.

Pin oak are worse the don't lose there leaves until the new ones come on. Even the small ones are so full of tight branches you can't find the coon in them.
our river bottoms have a similar "water oak" aka white oak, that grow HUGE. some places groves of them block out the sky in the summer when the leaves are on. gps signal is pretty much nil in those places.

It is well that war is so terrible, otherwise we should grow too fond of it.
