RIP Carroll's Blue Jewel

Got word yesterday that old Jewel has treed her last one.

She was owned by Herb Bentley the last few years of her life.

I was in the process of a major relocation and life upheaval when I sold her to him, and regretted it many times.

She was a natural from the time she was a puppy, and treed me a truckload of coons, as well as producing some nice hounds.

I remember the first night I ever hunted her at six months old.

I had to tie her up when she turned five months old because she was out running tracks every night, and I was afraid she would start treeing off alone and get messed up with nobody to go to her.

I had a 6 year old Dual Grand Champion that I planned to train her with.

Anyway, after I had left her on the chain for about a month, I took her one night and sent the old dog up a creek with her in the box.

He struck a bad track, and wasn't moving it much, just opening now and then.

She started barking in the box, wanting to go, so I got her out and held her until the old dog opened again.

She tore out of there and went to him, and jerked that "bad" track right out from under him, ran it up the creek about 3/8 of a mile and treed it.

She had the coon, and I got to her before the old dog did.

I went home and put a for sale ad up on this board and sold him.

She didn't need a pup trainer.

I have a female out of her here at the house to carry on that blood...I hope one day to have another one of her caliber tied up out back.

I am feeling a little melancholy this morning.

Rest in peace, old gal.

Jewel

John,
I can understand your sorrow. Hope you get another one that can also give you some nice memories. Its weird sometimes how you have a pup or dog that you know right from the start is going to be something Special. Her half brother Logan her is still alive and well. Not too many left out of Ol' Newton.
Take Care,
Scott

Scott, I am not authority on anything, but I am a firm believer that old Newton was one of the best stud dogs of my lifetime, and hardly any females were bred to him.

he could have been a breed changer.

Ol' Newton had the Ranger Blood back in there pretty good. You will still see his name show up in pedigrees for years to come. There are a couple of Top Granddaughters out there out of him that should carry on the line.

Freeman's Blue Amy was one of the last daughters of old Ranger II.

That was some good stock.

Newton

John,
I believe Newton went back to Ranger II a total of 6 times and to Bean's Ranger even more than that. Bean's Ranger produced Ranger II and Rebel. Pretty much the cornerstone of the Uchtman dogs in my opinion.

John, sorry to hear the ole gal passed on. You are doing the best thing you can by recalling the many fine memories she provided for you!

Believe it or not, I remember very well when you posted that Gr Nt Ch male for sale. I believe it was 2004? I was looking for an older dog at the time that would tree a coon, and your ad caught my eye. I also remember you explaining why he was for sale when you were asked the question. Dang if those years don't get to slipping on by.

Here's to recalling good memories, and looking forward to making some more with another nice gyp of her caliber one day!

Take care,
Vic

You know, that old hound was a pretty nice coon treer and mostly won by not getting minus points.

He was a nice easy handling pleasure dog.

But he wasn't the same kind of track dog as that female.

Very sorry to hear of this loss Mr. Carroll. It is very tough to find one half that good...even tougher to have to lose one like that. If I could change one thing about coon dogs it would be to double the years we have with them. Best of luck with the pup you have.

Hooch is out of Jewel.

I sold him as a young dog and believe me, he could tree a rough coon by himself before he was a year old.

She was sure enough pretty good.

And she was a track driving hussy and had a real nose. She could take a bad track and show you a coon in a hurry.

old Jewel

sorry to hear of this news John. Glad I got to see her go. She was for sure a track driving hussy, any hound that can stretch a few out a year in my country is a flat out track burner!!!
