Tied Out Behind The Barn

Got to thinking about some of the dogs I've hunted with over the years, and how I would love to have a pup out of some of them. These dogs were nice hounds! Track dogs, that treed coons accurately on a nightly basis. It amazes me how a couple of these dogs were never even bred. The others were just bred a couple times, and threw some super nice pups. It really made me wonder, how many super nice hounds are out there that will never get bred, or get the attention they deserve. You hear tails of them being tied out behind someone's barn. Why don't people breed to these type dogs? Is it because you don't hear anything about them? Are they not bred good enough? Just the other day I hunted with a buddy who has a nice male, track dog deluxe and tree's coons any where you turn him, and his pups are just like him. I asked him "Why don't you get some more females bred to him?" He simply said "He's not bred good enough to be a stud dog."
You never know a dog like that if bred more, could help the entire breed or make a lasting impact. Anyone else agree?

TrackDrifter, We always think there is something better out there, powerhouses, ads tell us that, some like to be in clicks, "he has money he has to have better than me"
As a youngster I too went a hunting the perfect dog, got my feelings hurt most of the time, Most of the guy's I went to never bred there own, were not even close to picky as I was and were like used car salesman, just pump out a pup and sell it to the young fella!
There are dogs that tree coons in all lines just make sure he comes from a family that is consistent on both sides.

Conrad it's just my opinion don't mean any disrespect to anyone but its just like buying a brand new cherry red car it runs good until just after the warenty is up they got your money!! Alot of these studs are reproducing this kind of pups do just enough to get your money they are bred that way the one time in all the years I went out and bred to somthing new I got somthing I don't like and the genes are so strong I am having trouble breeding it out and the only other choice I have is to throw everything away and start over with somthing behind the barn !!!!!!

Breeding

There are so many variables. Some stud dogs never have or never will reproduce their equal. Then you can have some pot licker that couldn't tree a coon in a fenced in back yard...that accidently pen breeds your best female and you get the best young dog you have ever owned...All you can do with genetics and breeding is increase your chances to reproduce a nice dog. There are no guarantees or sure things. I've seen a cross work great one time and then the same cross not ever work again...But I do believe you increase your chances with good genetics! And I do believe that way to much emphasis is placed on the male. My experience has taught me to start with an outstanding female and then find what she hits with and then breed as tight as you can without sinking the boat...The puppies should have a lot of the same good traits and will also show the bad traits of the parents. I Don't breed mouthy, mean, or shy dogs. Ever! And one last thing and I'll shut-up, (sorry I love this subject) Don't let your wife fall in love with a sorry dog!!! Cause you will feed him to his last days! hahahaha

Well, my wife fell in love with me...so I guess I wont starve no time soon.

I have known several dogs that should have been bred or bred more and never were. Most were just not advertised or hunted so the word got out there. I had a bluetick female I wished I had a puppy out of, then or now. Had a buddy years ago with a Beaver Lake Magic bred walker that had it all too and was never bred. The only naturally straight dog I ever saw...never ran anything but a coon. The guy got messed up on dope and the dog spent half his life tied on a 5 foot chain closed up in a tobacco barn. The guys dad fed the dog and would not sell him or let anyone hunt the dog. He knew how good the dog was and wasted him...too jealous of anyone else getting the dog and making something out of him.

Most people want a 6 generation all grand pup. I would like to find, but probably never will, a pup that has 6 generations of "PR" coon dogs on its papers. I have always thought this and there is no way to prove it, but the best dog to have ever hit the woods was probably never entered into a competition hunt. He was the dog tied out back of the barn, on a 5' chain, living in a dilapidated dog house. I don't necessarily think that genetics always plays a part in what the pups will be either. My buddy bred a deer running, fox chasing, gyp that wouldn't hardly run a coon to a trashy male dog that would tree a coon occasionally and got some pups out of them. They turned out to be a good line of dogs. The gyp he kept was the best dog I have ever followed. There is a local guy that is still breeding that very strain of dogs. They are track driving, coon treeing dogs. The pup has to have drive and the will. I am a firm believer in that pups and kids, or any offspring in general, are kinda like a roll of film they will develop to what they are exposed to. Training is the major key to get a pup doing what you want it to do but it has to have the drive to want to do it as well.

used to have a nt ch. male that was a great coondog. tree any type of track or layup. always thought he wasnt stud dog for one reason or another. when he was nine i finally bred him to a nice young female i had and got one of the smartest coon treeing pups i have ever hunted. he would absolutely destroy you with layup coons but could run a bad track also. he got killed on the road when he was 15 months old and the sire died bout 6 months before that. the whole litter turned out. kick myself everyday for not breeding him more he was a COONDOG. just got to reading to darn many stud ads and thinkin everyone elses was better. he was a half brother to world champion buck II.

I know where one is I don't own a hair on her wish I did. But have hunted with her few times and she is a freakin coondog best I have seen, she has been in one local hunt with a win on her, also been bred couple times and pups turned out awesome. They are quite few nice ones out there no one knows about but I guarantee you if this female would been in a big name persons hands she would be a big time female.

I know of one with nice pups on the ground. was bred twice with good results. same females bred to advertised studs got poor results. he has never been in a nite hunt. he is out of thrasher x wipeout koy female. his bro. & sis have been in hunts an are grnd. &kc ch.

I am startin to love these posts there are some silly people out there. if you dont like what your feedin then get rid of it its pretty simple the problem is people not the dogs . people dont cull any more period.
