Choosing The Big One!!

Glancing at the classifieds I noticed a lot of post titled "Future Winners," "Big Time Cross," "Cross of a Lifetime," and so on. The question I have is how much thought and preparation does everyone put in before they breed their big time male or female. The other question is HOW DO YOU CHOOSE THE RIGHT STUD?

Do you study pedigree's? Do you hunt with pups out of so and so? Do you ask around to get opinions and others thoughts? Is it how he's bred? What he's won? The way he looks? Is it because he's loud, or fast, or a jam up coon dog? Is it because he had a pretty picture in the Bloodlines? Or is it simply because you know the pups will sell?

I've heard about people driving as far as 18 hours 1 way just to breed a female to a certain stud, and read how people have paid thousands to buy semen from a certain stud. There's a lot of TIME and MONEY that goes into breeding. It is a HUGE part of our sport, possibly the most important part, just curious on your alls thoughts!!!

Had some guys drive 13 hours yesterday to breed their female but they had owned my stud dogs mother and grandmother we treed 5 coon with young dogs last night in bad weather wind and a little rain . The fellows were from Oklahoma they sure have a nice looking female and they studied their pedigree and think it will work.

I breed based strictly on bloodlines. I dont breed to any big time winner unless he has what compliments my lines. An old timer once told me "dont breed to the world beater, breed to the ones that produced the world beater".

I know one thing unless you have had a chance to witness first hand as to how a dog operates and also how he reproduces a person needs to do a lot of reference calling to honest and dependable people.I like to choose ..people of good character, not only just the dog. There is a lot of time and money and a tremendous amout of hardwork,frustration,and uncertainity,even risk of losing your female most people never even think about when it come time to breed a bitch . I put a lot of emphasis on the health and welfare of my bitch. I have struggled for about 2 years on what I would cross on my bitch for I just have not been around the big hunts and seen for myself. I would rather not breed her even now because she is a joy to hunt.But I know if you got a good dog you bette do all you can to keep it..I do look at a lot of pedigrees but I almost always stay in the family somewhat as to what produced the product(dog) I like to follow.I consider the sires pups ,his littermates and their offspring and I put a great deal of importance as to what style of dog are the grandparents to this next pup.Also I try to breed for the same huntin style ...ALOT OF HARD WORK AND LITTLE RETURN....

I try to find a STUD, that is as close to my female as possible. Same mouth, same drive, same hunting styles, etc. I personally think that way makes the most sense, for example if you take A + A you should get an A right? I breed to a dog that I've hunted with several times, and seen his offspring go as well. I try to gather as much info about his ancestor's as I can. Things like desire, mouth, early or late starters, accuracy, shy or timid, any health issues, were they rough, or throw rough pups, etc. I've always bred to try and get myself a potential coon dog, if I made a few bucks that was just a bonus. From what I've seen and heard there's been some coon treer's come out of the crosses I've made, but hopefully with more knowledge, homework, and a lot of luck I'll make a lot better crosses in the future.
