The Blue Dog Project/ Lotsagrit Wild n Blue Jazz
NOT AsSOCIATED WITH THE WELL ESTABLISHED BLUE DOG KENNEL OWNED AND OPERATED BY MR ADKINS OF WEST VIRGINIA
Hey folks thought it would be fun to have written record of project I am working on. I have coonhunted for 33 years. I have hunted curs, hounds and fiests. I have been mostly dedicated to Plotts my adult life.
This past fall I began feeling a bit nestalgic about my beginnings in the sport. When I was 17 I had a bluetick female that was as nice of young dog I ever hunted. One not gut she hung herself in my humble pen I had. I heard her do it and dismissed it as a booger bark. Next morning I was sick.
Fast forward to 2014. After several years of hunting plotts I began looking for a Bluetick. I ended up finding a pup that was Bred by Nick Jennings out of his Jewl female and Dave McGinnis Chief dog formerly owned by Mackie Manns.
So, I'll post pics and progress reports here. Hope you enjoy.

The first day home it is -2 degrees. With my favorite hunting partner also being my 15 year old daughter, it didn't take long to start ruining the new pup Lol

Jazz 11 weeks
I am fortunate enough to live in a pup trainers dream. Dead end road, creeks woods fields and Indiana coons. Jazz will run loose here until sh starts hunting on her own. She is house broke by now but as the weather warms she will spend most of her time outside exploring and learning to cross creeks, deal with livestock and critters.

NORTHERN BLUE JAZZ
JAZZ SURE IS GROWING INTO A FINE LOOKING OUTFIT. SOUNDS LIKE SHE IS SHOWING SOME PROMISING SIGNS OF BEING A NICE PUP TO START. SHOULD BE PRETTY EASY WHERE YOU ARE AT, AND FROM THE REPORTS ON CHIEF PUPS I THINK YOU WILL LIKE HER. LOOKING FORWARD TO HUNTING WITH HER THIS FALL. BIMBO IS NOW RESIDING IN ILLINOIS, AND I AM CURRENTLY WITHOUT A HOUND. I HAVE A REAL BUSY YEAR AHEAD OF ME, BUT WILL BE READY TO GET SOMETHING THIS FALL IF ALL GOES WELL. I HOPE JAZZ IS THE START OF A LONG COONHUNTING CAREER WITH BLUEDOGS FOR YOU. GLAD TO HAVE A GOOD HOUNDSMAN LIKE YOURSELF FOLLOWING THE BLUES.
Thanks Donnie. Anytime you want to go along with my soup hounds let me know.

Thanks for the bump Nick.
I really am going to have to get better about taking pics. Had Jazz in the woods two nights ago with my good friend Jerry Moll and his young coon treeing walker. A lot of new experiences for Jazz last night. First time wearing a tracking collar. it looked comical and I had it cranked down as far as it would go to fit her. I wasn't sure I would even need it but she did range out good for a 4 1/2 month old pup. At one time she was 174 yards. She would hunt and check in. If she got bored she headed out again. She did open on a track, lacking all the confidence in the world! LOL!
She was at every tree but was a bit overwhelmed by Jerry's intense tree dog. She sat back and watched. It was apparent that their was some sensory overload going on and coon scent was not on the radar screen. She finally did get in a little treeing at the fourth tree but nothing serious.
Overall it was a good night. She got a lot of experience riding, loading, leading, being tied at the tree.
The funniest part for me was coming in from a hunt and instead of putting a dog in the kennel, she follows me in the house!
No pressure-just fun...for now.

you said it, EXPERIENCE
keep exposing her out, and she'll take care of the rest.
I had to customize a tracking collar last summer for my walker pup. Nametag was in the way of letting the buckle cinch tighter, so I put the original orange collar back on with no nametag on and cut the extra collar tail off so it wasn't soo long. Still had a nametag on her regular collar so it worked good.
im getting outta work today at 4pm, gunna take the two pups up to my uncles house....Gunna see if they'll light into a roll caged coon.

JAZZ
Sounds like you have a great prospect in Jazz. Great looking pup with a great pedigree.. Keep her in the woods and you will soon have a fine coonhound. Have fun with her and Good Hunting!!!

It wasn't text book but she got it done. 5 months and seven days old and Jazz treed her first solo at night. She got out about 150 yards and started working up and down a steep bank on a creek. She opened a few times, whined around, left it and I just sat down. She tried to work the track couldn't take it out and whined around on the tree. I just waited at about fifty yards out not saying a word. She came back to it a third time and opened up on it. She treed harder than I thought she would. I walked in, shined the tree and it was a small tree going into a large maple. The coon was in the maple. I let her tree for about ten minutes and praised her up all the way to the house.

Took a short hunt with Jazz tonight. The first thirty minutes was a walk in the dark. She is hunting a little deeper and ranged out to nearly 200 yards. She showed more hustle and hunt. She was losing interest down the creek and began hanging around me. So I leashed her up and worked on handling.
Before putting her up, I decided to walk out behind the barn and cut her. She ran about fifty yards and opened up, screaming on a track. Well I thought it was about time for a trash race. She took it up on a hill side about 175 yards and slammed into tree mode. And I don't mean pecking around. She flat slammed into it.
Thanks for reading, more to come.

Well last night got pretty western. There was blood, split trees, and wild hunting.
Jazz just has not been going hunting as good as I like, even for a pup. I decided to load up an dog to turn loose with her and see if she would go along. Well she did and she didn't. At one point she was .6 on the Garmin. The funny part, the older dog was in the truck! She left with the older dog, but she wasn't waiting on him.
First drop was at the head of a very large valley. Boone struck and took a track east, up a feeder creek. Jazz was to my west and running her own. Boone locates and I let him tree. Jazz is still west about 250 and pecking around, trying to get hers treed. After twenty minutes, Jazz isn't treed and I walk into Boone. I see his coon sitting up as I walk in. About that time, Jazz opens up with a big locate and trees...100 yards south. Split!
I leash Boone where he is treed and hurry to find Jazz under a big chinkapin oak. She is not real confident and I give her some encouragement. She has a coon. First split tree at 5 1/2 months.
She also was covered in blood. She split here ear somewhere in the cut over. Looked like we were killing hogs.
I gathered up the dogs and headed to the truck. We made one more drop. Boone and Jazz struck together. Boone ended up under a coon. Jazz wouldn't honor him. She was working to the south and thought she was going to get hooked up again. Never happened.
Nick Jennings called Chief Mr Deep and Lonely. Could Jazz be marked by those traits? Stay tuned.

Mr. Powell you are doing a fine job with your little female. No reasons at all to be discouraged with what she's doing at 5 1/2 months old. Some pups cant do what she's doing at a year old. You should be very proud of how far she has come along. Seems like it was just yesterday that I found her that frozen morning at 5 weeks old sitting in Jewells ice cold water bucket hanging on for dear life. Now she's split treeing at 5.5 months old ahaha
Keep up the good work. I might offer you a high $$ amount for her one day..
-Nick

Discouraged? Heck I can't wait for it t get dark each night. I just put the whole story on here because I can tell you after 30 years of hunting and starting pups, I have never seen anything like this. If I was reading it I wouldn't believe it.
Most people think it's a ploy to pump up a dog to sell it for big money. I just got inspired to write about this pup and document what we were doing. Anybody that knows me knows
1 if I find something I like I like to hang onto it
2 I don't sell many dogs because I figure if they won't suit me they won't suit anybody else.
I took her out last night by herself. She left me pretty decent and dropped in about 150 and opened up. I think she was winding a den tree. She wasn't moving it and couldn't figure it out. She ran back by me and stopped about 20 yards in front of me. The wind was blowing out of the west. We were on top of a small ridge and she threw her nose in the air and headed into the wind. About 75 yards out she opened and was screaming on a track. She was moving it good. She slammed into a tree at about 275 yards. Located nice and settled into a chop.
As I walked in she was down milling around a bit and getting back on the wood hot and heavy. I put her back on the tree and leashed her. She was treed on a pignut hickory and a I found the coon easily.
I'm liking her real well. Thanks for reading.
