questions for all the breeders please help make my mind up

Ive got a walker female that im riding the fence on breeding im gonna tell you about her an what my thinking is an you tell me what your opinion is good or bad I wont be affended just want an honest opinion she is a hard headed but smart not timid in any way she has a very good hound mouth for a female real loud great locate I mean a real good locate she is hot to medium nose dog cant really drive an old track an if we get a good frost she really struggles if you cut her with another dog she will go hard an will get as deep as possible till she strikes a coon if she isnt struck in an another dog strikes she'll go help if she strikes first she'll stay on it an drive it to the tree an put it an park if she splits she'll take all the pressure you can give her she will split often because she goes real hard an normally is a first strike dog an shes an honest strike dog looks pretty good in all territory an looks good in thin coon she does look better in thick coon shes a little more tree then track id say now when I cut her by herself if she aint treed she normally will range around 500 an she acts like she hits a wall an won't keep going now all this being said my thinking is should I not breed her cuz I would like her more independent an alot more harder going by herself an more cold nosed maybe not real cold nosed but have the ability to really drive them tracks I like a dog to fly on about every track I really like a good track I dont like them to pick up a week old track an run it for an hour not moving much now should I breed her to a dog throwing these traits or should I not breed her an invest in a female more my style of hunting type im not looking to breed because I want to sell pups the cross will be for me an what I dont want I will sell to cover my cost of the breeding an paying them up not looking to make no money because I know there aint no money in selling pups an I know this subject has been beat to death by people asking what to breed to an who would be interested in this cross but if someone would help me make a decision that would be great shes a real nice bitch done plenty of winning an most people wouldn't think there isnt any holes in her because shes a pretty good all around female I cant state enough im not breeding to sell pups just wondering whos breed a female with holes like this an what was the outcome of cross did it work or was it a wast of time I know a little about breeding but not enough an I believe breeding should be left to people looking to better a breed not some yahoo looking to make a dollar on some pups outta a worthless female this is why im asking what a educated breeder would do thanks for reading an thanks in advance for any information you give good or bad I appreciate it

If you honestly figure the cost of gettin her bred, and the expense of raising a litter, and the headache of gettin rid of them you will discover its cheaper to pay top dollar for an exceptional pup from a proven cross.

here is my question do like the female? Do you like the way she hunts?
Do you like her mouth? If you answered yes to these question then you have your answer. Then the next question what are her weaknesses? once you figured those out, then you need to find a stud that will compliment her and turn her weaknesses into strengths in the pup.

The most basic, simple breeding advice that we should ALL follow is this...

If you don't want another one just like the one you have....don't breed it.

That is basic advice. The truth is that it takes generations to build up from a single breeding, you have to know what you really have, why it is like it is, and what needs to be done to change it, and if you don't like the one you have it goes to say that you won't like what it reproduces.

The only thing id want to see in her is better tracking ability meaning alittle colder nose an more ability to drive it not necessary wanting a cold nose dog just one that has the ability to strike it an drive it FAST deeper hunting when shes by herself even tho most times she dont need it i like a dog with a heavy gas petal I wouldnt change her mouth at all an im not really a fan of if she aint struck she'll cover one that is i like them having thier own minds I like em independent so basically id like to improve three thing more independent/track power/ gas petal I realize I could buy a pup outta a cross that both parents posses what I want but ive done this before an they had flaws like rite now I own a male rite now that is clover/ wipeout/ flat run pete which every dog in his pedigree is a wide range good track dog an independent hes a real nice young dog that has most those traits that will probably do some winning if I keep pushing him but when hes finished im gonna sell cuz hes strait chop mouth which dont bother me I prefer a bawl mouth cuz I like to enjoy listening to them but its not just his strait chop that gets me he isnt loud at all an has a pitch of what you'd hear from a yard dog everytime he opens when hunting I hate it lol not to mention I have to follow around so I can hear him I said all that to show my point a view on getting one outta a proven cross cuz it dont always happen the way you want so would I be best off going in search of one that suits me I just hate finding good ones because you have to hunt with about twenty dogs an hours of time on the road to go see a dog thats not what its hyped up to be also would like to thank every one thats responded to my post

Let me preface this by saying that I'm not a breeder and have no experience breeding.

I would say Joe answered your question for you.

Another thing is finding the male that you would breed to. I think the only way to decide on a male to breed to is to hunt with pups out of him. That can be just as challenging, I hear a lot of times of guys with personal females breeding to a male only to find out information later that they didn't like.

Normally I always push people away from breeding.
However it sounds like you have a nice hound. Your post shows your intelligent enough to take your decision seriously. I believe very few hounds if any don't have holes. Further to complicate matters what one guy may desire in a hound another may consider a fault. For instance where I live very hard going dogs, often are running by coon,but in parts of the south this trait is a must.

My advice for you and this is what I'm doing, is start looking for someone who can mentor you and take you under there wing.

So to answer your question I would say pass this time around, try to find a pup out of a stud that you think you might want to cross, from a reputable and experienced breeder. Maybe you will be able to kill 2 birds with one stone, and build a friendship with the breeder and also find the future stud for your female. Unfortunately though things don't often seem to work out that perfectly.

No one else needs to post anything for you have heard from two of the top breeders out there today that have been studing dog genetics for many years and if their advice isn't good enough i don't think you will find any better answers to your question.

I am not a breeder but if i were in your situation i would go with spending the money and get the kind of pup you are looking for.JMO

I been waiting for 15 months to find the kind of pup i am looking for remember a piece of paper will lay still and let you write anything on it.

I am not saying anything about your female. Any breeder that is serious about improvement has to make some harsh choices from time to time.

There is also a simple medical procedure that can be done to remove the chance of her genes continuing in the population. It is actually used quite often with no ill affects.

I bred only a small fraction of the dogs that I have owned over the years.

Cull simply means to remove the genetic potential from the breeding population. It doesn't have to mean anything more.
