English Promoters, Who?

I have hunted English Dogs on and off for 30 yrs. and have had some real good ones. My influence came from a great friend, Bert Oney. My question is who and why influenced you to hunt English hounds. although I hunt Whitey bred walkers now I still like to see good English hounds.

Mr. Berton Oney. I bought several from him over the years . He helped me in many ways and alot about understanding line breeding. The first line breeding cross I ever tried was from a 1/2 brother x 1/2 sister cross directly out of NTCH Perk's Northern Cujo. It was the best cross I believe I ever made to this day. Unfortunately I was only able to make that cross once. This cross produced GRNITECH 'PR' BROWN'S GAULEY RIVER DAN. If I remember correctly I believe Dan had 46 pups. He produced GRNITECH Gauley River Ben HTX3, Nitech Gauley River Ike HTX 3 Ike needs one win to make GRNITECH , GRCHNITECH Brown's Gauley River Pearl HTX , GRCH Greenbrier River Ruby needed 1 win to make NITECH.. And several topnotch coon and bear hound's that never was enter into completion. The first real coon dog I owned was a female out of Oney's Tom . She is what turned me to Berton Oney hounds

Who got me into English

Well I guess that would be my Dad. Having said that, a boyhood friend gave me my first English coonhound. He was 1/2 English and 1/2 redbone, but he was blue tick in color, just as his registered English father was.

He went back to the same dogs behind Vanzant's Sam,i.e.; Mountain Music Blue, but he didn't have any Sam in his pedigree. Dad Later got ahold of his 1st registered English female, and bred her to a registered english dog that was a 1/2 brother of the dog that boy gave me in elementary school, and from that cross is where I got my first registered english coonhound. Her name was Hooper Ridge Joy, Dad kept her brother and called him Hooper Ridge Pride, Thus we had Pride & Joy,LOL.

Dad crossed that same dog (1st registered english female) and bred her a second time to Bates Screaming Deamon. Thats where I got my second registered coonhound, and man did that dog teach me what a real coon dog worked like!! He was the real deal coon catching machine and I called him Tree Banging Buddy. Ole Joy was born in 1977, and this second dog (Tree Banging Buddy) was born in 1979. I then Bred Joy to Gr.Nt.Ch. Whitts Blue Jim (Bates Blue CashXParkers Rambling Sue) and I got Nt.Ch. Hooper Ridge Queen. Queen was High Scoring English Female (Sat. Nt.) at 1983 English Days, Smithfield Ohio, This was queens first competition hunt. She had a very good nose and extremely accurate. I bred my Buddy dog to Queen in 1985 and raised a pup called Nt.Ch Raw Dawg Rowdy. I only took him to Nt.Ch. and pulled him out of the hunts cause he was starting to not like to be chewed on when he got about 3 years old.

I later bred Joy to Bates Hard Time Gun. From that I got a female I called Hooper Ridge Hooker. I sold her to Mr. Jim Chaffins when she was coming two years old, and Jim took her on to be the two time High Scoring English female at the Winter Classic in Albany Georgia. This was within the 1st five years of the classic being started if memory serves me correctly. Jim called this female Oakwood Hooker.

I later on bred Rowdy back to his niece, Dogs name was Gr.Nt.Ch. Hooper Ridge Dolly. From this cross I got UKC Gr.Nt.Ch. Hooper Ridge Rocket. Rocket went on to earn the title of AKC world Champion English Male in 2002 and again in 2003. He was the best (Male) Pleasure/Competition coon hound I have ever owned. I then Bred Rocket to a female directly out of Michigan Swamp Rooster, and from that cross I got UKC Gr.Nt.Ch. Hooper Ridge Rocket's Top Gun. I then Bred a female who was a Grand Pup to my Rowdy dog to Gr.Nt.Ch. Adkins Night Thunder (Wilcox & Timber Valley Queen bred) and from that I have Gr.Nt.Ch. Hooper Ridge Hang'em High Holly. Holly is the best competition/pleasure FEMALE coonhound I have ever had.

There you have it. This is a list of almost every dog I have ever hunted in a competition hunt, since 1978. They are all English Hounds. I have NEVER owned anything but an English Hound. And there you have where I started from to where I am at today with my English hounds. Why do I keep them you may ask??? Well I guess I never found anything along the way that I felt could consistently beat them night in and night out , so I just stuck with them trying to improve on what I have.

Good Luck to all and thanks so much for reading!!

I have several. Growing up in Kentucky I had a lot of respect for my friend David Tackett. He was a winner in every state and big hunt he was ever in. The way I train a dog and judge a dog is all because of what I've learned from Paul Barton. Paul is absolutely the best dog man I know. When it comes to raising pups it would have to be my good friend Dean Thompson that has influenced me the most. Also, Dean unintentionally taught me how to deal with people. When it comes to who I'd like to be like in ten years it would have to be Larry Wilcox or Stanley Nichols. In my opinion, Larry and Stan have helped the breed more than most ever will. There's still a lot more that I admire and that have helped the breed, Berton Oney, Lee Wilder, Rory Cowles, Chad Nay, Asa Briggs, Richard Moore, Jason Bullard just to name a few.

Emmeit Dalton had the most influence on me and I believe men like Ed Bates, Lee Wilder, Gene Boyd, Mike Raef, Carl Carroll are some of the ones most influence the English Breed back then and still now. There are many others like Emmeit Dalton, Rory Cowles, Asa Briggs, Jason Bullard, Larry Wilcox, Stanley Nichols and the Isch Family.
