Opinions on Coon Pen

Does it really do them that much good. I have a 1yr old that I was thinking about sending to one for a month or two. I'm on the fence about it. The dog has already treed his own and goes hunting every drop. Doesn't get treed every drop, but hunts hard by himself. Would it do him any good or would I be wasting my time and money. Who runs a good pen and has a good set-up for hounds?

I don't like them their is one close to me its fine to take a young dog in their and hunt him by his self a little but its to easy and the bad habbits seem to double after they spent time in their jmo.....

You can confuse the dog by sending him somewhere that has multiple coons to choose every time he is turned loose. It sounds like he is doing what he needs to be but that where you live the coons are not that thick. Very few places have natural coons around in the kind of situation he will see in a live pen. If you live where the coons are a little thin I don't think you want him now going to the woods expecting to find all those coons but they are not there. That is enough to get any young dog into some bad habits. If he isn't treeing enough coons for you just remember that having coons to start with is half the battle. That's not the dogs fault.

They are excellent for introducing a young dog to coon hunting. Once they start to trail and tree they need to be out of the pen and in the woods. It sounds as if your dog is past the coon pen stage.

Im in one. Ive saw grown supposedly coondogs that cant tree a coon in it. Its 40 ac though. Id actually not want to hunt it every night..Its however a great place to work on bad habits in a controlled enviroment. Sending a pup to one for a month or 2 would all depend on who ran it for me. If hes already going and treeing. I probably wouldn't send him to a pen. Just send him to someone that will hunt the hair off him for a month or 2.

A coon pen is just like a shock collar, when used correctly, they are a great tool.
