Pleasure hunter needs advice

Hello everyone. I have never competition hunted and at this time I have no intention to. I have been out of hunting for a few years and am looking to get back into it. My last dog was a direct son of Nitro. He was easy to handle, didn't hunt too deep and had no mean bones in his body toward other dogs. He was a true pleasure to hunt. He came down with cancer and passed away and I just lost interest in it for awhile. I am looking to get back in and would like to know what you guys think is a good cross for me to look at. I don't plan to competition hunt but may someday. However, I don't want a tree happy, run me all over creation slick treeing dog. I am sure I am opening up a can of worms that everyone has an opinion on but that's why I am asking, I want to know what you guys have and how they act in the woods and in the kennel. Thanks for your help.

Last thing I had that I called a complete hound far as running , treeing and accuracy in walker line was a buck creek bred female I had . Only one I've ever owned outta this line but if I could find another like her I'd fork out the cash !

He was by no means perfect. He would tree a possum if he ran up on one red hot but that didn't bother me as I didn't competition hunt. He never was interested in deer or foxes but would tree a possum from time to time. I would rather have a walker if I could find it. Nothing against other breeds, I just am partial to walkers. To each his own. Kinda like the Ford, Chevy, Mopar, etc. debate.

My biggest complaint against him was his nose. He struggled with a cold track but I was OK with that.

Why not stick with what you liked? Got a grandson to nitro that is exactly as you described your old dog to be. Might sell him to the right pleasure hunter if interested pm me.

I agree try to find a breeder that has some dogs out of nitro, chances are what ever he is breeding would be similar.

A lot of walkers are bred to get treed quick, some lines that are known more for being a trailing type dog, would be wipe out, clover and skuna river.

I am located in Morganton NC. I am considering a pup out of the stud dog Magic at Roanoke River Kennels and a nitro bred female. Anyone have any experience with the Magic dog?

Most walkers are smart, some are wired up where they appear dumb, but in reality they just need more exercise.

Nobody has any experience with the dog at Roanoke River Kennels? Also, I'd like to find a pup out of blood that can work a cold track.

I don't know anything about that Magic dog.But back in the day when I lived in N.C. Going to the hunts. If Tony Ray was leading it around you could bet it was a pretty good dog.So I'm guessing the same would still apply today.
