Anyone else seeing this with cross bred Hounds??

Past weekend in two different states at hunts I came across about the same situation and got me to thinking. Now before I go into detail the dogs I am talking about here are young but being hunted in the hunts so the movement I see had to start a couple years ago.

1. Talking to a man and he started talking about his Black and Tan. After a short period of time I asked him about the breeding and he said he was a cross bred and half walker.
I asked him why he called him a Black and Tan and not a Walker. He said he looked just like a Black dog and he always had Black dogs and that is what he hunts. I thought about the one for a minute. lol Anyway I asked him if he liked what the walker had to offer why didn't he just get him a walker. He said he liked Black dog and we left it at that.

2. Week later in a different state I ran into a guy talking about his Redbone. Please remember both these guys I have seen around the hunts for years and they are friends I meet on the road. But not close enough friends that I know all about their dogs and what they are breeding. I asked about the red dogs pedigree and it was half walker. Now this guy told me almost the same thing the first guy did on why he called it a Redbone.

Now both these breedings took place over two years ago so it is not something that just happened. Anyone else see this to any extent. I guess seeing it with the same story line two weekends in a row got me to thinking again.

Yeah, I don't think we will see many breeding a Black dog to a Bluetick or a Redbone to a Plott. When it is all said and done, cross breeding is mostly a way for these guys to hunt a Walker without hunting a Walker.

Lets face it "The dogs" to beat in the hunts r Walkers & English. There getting a piece of them, callm whatever they like .

Posted by Ryan J on 12-20-2014 03:56 PM:

I must agree that the walker will be crossed with all of the breeds. But, why not I would be sick and broke trying to find a dog of off color to win with in the off breeds. I have looked and there is a good dog in the off breeds but when it is all said and done they want $10,000 for a dog that hunts no better then a average walker. Sorry guys I think I said more truth then most can handle.

.

Ryan let me share something with you. The cream of the crop walker dogs bring the same price. I have always had walker dogs and guess I always will but there are a lot out there that make a lot of noise and don't produce the coon like they should. I wish more would be eliminated from the breeding pool before it is too late. Perhaps crossing the walkers with the other breeds may be better for the walkers than it will be for the other breeds. It might save them from destroying themselves. lol

I don't care what color the dog is as long as the dog will tree coons the way I want them too.

Walker power, they need it. We know it, and they know it. Lol., call it what you want, but we know if it made any thing of a dog, it was the walker they needed., . other breeds dont have the heart, the tree power, or the hunt to compete on regular basis, so breed there breed to a walker. Now we can all be happy., yea...

Since walkers and blueticks are colors off the English breed turned into their own breed, maybe English is the dominate breed since there are blue and tri colored English dogs still. Kind of blows the theory of walkers dominating . In the big game world it's interesting that it's totally the opposite , it makes for interesting discussion for sure

You often hear this about Walkers originating from the English Coonhounds. Not true. They originated from foxhounds, both American and English Foxhounds. So no, English Coonhounds are not the dominate breed although the best dog I ever hunted with was a Redtick.

Cross Bred.....

Best dog I have ever seen was a half Black & Tan and half Walker......my Dad owned, raised, and trained him, he looked like old Lipper himself. He was a Coon catching Machine.

Back in the early 70's it seemed like every fox hunter had at least one in their pack that would tree. The owner would get tired of that and they would migrate to a Coonhunters house. Not sure how much of that happened in other parts of the country.

I agree.I think a EnglishXWalker cross would work good.

That is an excellant question. Does anyone know some old time foxhunters? I too would like to know where the tree instinct in the walker breed came from. We all know that they started out as track driving running hounds but at what point did they become tree dogs and where did it come from??????

It should work great!

Heres a question ive been pondering say you crossed a english /walker an it was dynamite the perfect blend now what? If you breed it to a walker you'll dull out the english blood that made it great or vis versa by breeding to an english you'll dull out the walker an how do you think they'd reproduce do you think an x breed would throw different traits meaning if it was half walker/english and breed it to an english of the same blood of his/her English side would the walker half even throw a trait? Just something I've been thinking about not trying to argue or nothing but just curious on what other people thought on the breeding side of the xbred dogs heres another one say you have a tight linebred english dog an wanted to make an out cross cuz you wanted some more range an drive in your stock so you breed to say a wipeout dog like zeb3 an took a male from that cross to further your linebreeding an made another cross on your english stock with you wipeout english dog wouldnt the heavy linebreeding cancel the wipeout out of the gene pool or when you went to make an out cross on a linebred stock would you have to search for a heavy linebred outcross?

There were always some that would tree, they were the CULLs that would fall outa the race and get treed.
The birth of the treeing walker.

I wonder if you breed a top foxhound to say rat attack blood how they'd turn out all that hard running... range... an trackdriver with a tree dog I think it would work good

.

I am beginning to feel Coonhunters think they can fix anything with training when the facts are we could do a better job if we didn't breed half the dogs we do. Breeding is the most important thing we do and like the fox hunters that got rid of the foxhounds that treed if the Coonhunters got rid of the coon hounds that won't tree or won't hunt we would be better off. Instead of that we try and figure out how to make one trail better, hunt harder and tree more accurate. Then make it the mom or dad of our next litter and wonder why they won't track, hunt or tree.

Posted by Bayemup34 on 12-20-2014 08:19 PM:

I haven't been around too many many walkers other than the treein kind, but my bear huntin partner has 2 July walkers that can go all the way on a bear, strike it, run it, and tree it. And they will tree on it. He had a third one that wouldn't tree but she's no longer with us.

It's almost comical how many believe breeding is some kind of mathematical equation, two plus two equals four. Hard runner bred to hard treer equals hard running hard treeing coondog. If only it was so.

I've got a plug your welcome to hunt with anytime you want. I bet you can't follow her all night. I've hunted with some of the winningest hounds of all time. She had more heart and moter than any walker I've ever seen.
