Distemper

Mr. Morgan,

I was told... you have seen or heard about an outbreak of sickness or mortality in raccoons in northeastern Kentucky. We have recently diagnosed raccoons in Meade and Carter Counties with canine distemper; both cases were reported to be part of a series of raccoon deaths in the area. Canine distemper is a highly contagious disease that we see in raccoons every summer in various parts of the state; it can also affect other carnivorous animals. Whenever we have a case of a raccoon that is sick or neurologic, we also test it for rabies; however, it is very rare in Kentucky for rabies to be found in a raccoon. There was one positive case of rabies in raccoons in each of 2009 and 2010, although hundreds have been tested during the last 5 years. Below is more information about canine distemper.
