I've got a Night Owl night vision with infra red. After you get to the tree you can cut off all lights and turn it on with the infra red and if the coon is in the tree you'll find him. He doesn't have to look at you only have his eyes open. If any part of is eye is where the infra red picks it up you'll see it.

I use ATN night vision with thermal heat imaging. In the summer there is no need to ever wonder if you dog is right or wrong you will no forsure.

I have both night vision as well as infrared. The advantage to NV is that since you are not shining any light that the coon can see they will almost always look down if you squall. If he's there and just refuses to look then you will probably not ever see the coon.
With infrared it don't matter if they look down or not, you will see a ball of white heat sitting in the tree. It is not very good for making a positive ID that that big white ball of heat is a coon. It could be a possum or house cat, but at least you will definitely know for certain whether or not the tree is slick and of course you will know where he is in the tree to turn on regular lights and have a look.
I have to ask...why do you think or say it would be a big advantage???

Yeah, It is effective. I use mine for predator calling at night. There is a difference between effective and practical though...I think if coonhunting was my main interest I would have better been served to put the $11,500.00 for the FLIR and $3500.00 for each of the 3rd gen NV's on a coondog.

I ordered mine from Cabela's a couple of years ago. It cost around 200.00 dollars.

thermal imaging

FLIR makes a new thermal imaging gadget that your I phone snaps into It turns your I phone into a thermal imaging camera. They are going for $250.00 bucks right now on the FLIR website.

Is it worth the money?

I have to very seriously doubt it...anytime the rest of the world is paying over $10,000.00 for a Thermal weapon sight and someone comes up with a $250.00 "does the same thing"....well...again, I doubt it.
Just like night vision. American made mil-spec 3rd gen scopes are over $3000.00 new and still well over $2000.00 used but Cabelas has night vision for $200.00???? You get what you pay for. I can say for a fact that there is a galactic difference between mil-spec U.S. 3rd gen and Russian junk.
The problem with thermal, and I have the best there is, is that it is very hard to tell if that big white ball of heat up in the tree is a cat, coon or possum. Even a mouse looks pretty big when he runs by because thermals don't have a lot of depth perception. The first time I saw a deer I thought it was a rhinoceros.
