I've got a Night Owl night vision with infra red. After you get to the tree you can cut off all lights and turn it on with the infra red and if the coon is in the tree you'll find him. He doesn't have to look at you only have his eyes open. If any part of is eye is where the infra red picks it up you'll see it.
I use ATN night vision with thermal heat imaging. In the summer there is no need to ever wonder if you dog is right or wrong you will no forsure.

I have both night vision as well as infrared. The advantage to NV is that since you are not shining any light that the coon can see they will almost always look down if you squall. If he's there and just refuses to look then you will probably not ever see the coon.
With infrared it don't matter if they look down or not, you will see a ball of white heat sitting in the tree. It is not very good for making a positive ID that that big white ball of heat is a coon. It could be a possum or house cat, but at least you will definitely know for certain whether or not the tree is slick and of course you will know where he is in the tree to turn on regular lights and have a look.
I have to ask...why do you think or say it would be a big advantage???
What's thermal imaging cost
