~~~Who's the best at starting pups?????~~~

I've got a nice 7 month old female with all the tools to be a nice hound but I've got her litter mate sister that I like better so she hasn't been hunted as hard. I don't want to sell her because she's got everything a man could ask for in a female.

So:
Who have yall had the best luck with starting your pups?
How much do they charge?
Results?

I've never done this before, but I'm thinking about trying it.
All input is appreciated, thanks.

Idk know of anyone, but I think the better trainers don't advertise because there so much in demand. At least that's my understanding, depending on how much time you have you could try tackling both. I know some guys will start pups in pairs, drags, caged coon etc...since all your really doing is exposing the dog to coon, having more then one dog can help with the confidence. Then when it comes to hunting time they will rotate them by drops. The hard part comes when there ready to be pounded. That being said I generally only focus on one pup. Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

That's why I was hoping to get some input from everybody on here, I figured the best ones didn't have ads posted. I don't want her to go to somebody that won't do her any good. She's got a loud mouth and is a hard tree dog. I'm not a big fan of her personality though. She's programmed more like a cat, and by that I mean she doesn't want to be around other dogs much. She prefers to be by herself doing her own thing. I just enjoy working with her sister more, but I sure as heck don't want to sell her because I believe she's got what it takes to be a winner. I could start her but I don't want to split time with the pup I like better. I guess I just got TOO lucky when I bought both of these pups. I planned on selling the one I liked the least, but like I said before she's got all the tools you could ever want in a young female, but her sister does too haha 😆

I don't know who does (training pups for others) now........but I can tell you why I quit doing it.

there just wasn't enough money in it. just that simple. there was no way I could ask enough to cover my expenses and time.

In the 80s (when gas was a dollar or maybe a little less) we kept around 10 pups a month here for others. We had a good rig dog and lots of river bottems backroads to cruise..and hunted all night every night doing it. we also had a small town where every coon that was live trapped for getting into someones trash or shed ect got handed to us to release somewhere. seems like it was $125 or $150 a month plus feed we charged, so 1250-1500 a month minus gas........and we used ALOT of gas lol. All we did was get the fire started with that many as for the most part it was different dogs every month.....and then there owners took them home to put miles on.

In the 90s I was on my own......I was never really crazy about having that many around, and was more interested in working on talented dogs but where in one way or another problem cases........seems like I charged $300 a month plus feed and usually kept 1 or 2 at a time..I know I prob spent every dime in gas alone. wearing out pickups and time spent were on me I guess :/

then in the early 2000s I worked with just a single breeder and bloodline... and ate costs for the most part..but also got perks like getting to hunt some finished (grntch)breeding stock others would die to try, and they belonged to a friend.....so meh even steven.

That was the last of it...other than one here and there for a friend or something......the insane price I would have to charge........and coondogs are NOT made in 1 month btw.....isn't near what the market could bare..........so I had to go with an if I don't own it I don't hunt it policy.

I'm looking for somebody that could keep her for a while, not just a month. I'm wanting a dog I could take to town when I get her back. A dog that still makes a few mistakes is fine but I'd want her to be running and treeing consistently. I've introduced her to coons and got her interest up, but I can't finish two dogs. I may even be interested in partnering with somebody on her. I'm not sure that that's the way I want to go though.

Like I said, its a cost prohibitive business on both ends if done right. On the owners end he would have to just about HAVE to get a super star for even breaking even becomes a reality.........on the trainers end the investment in time and expenses, for lets face it somebody elses dog, means they would have to charge a small fortune to make it worth while.

That means only the guys with deep pockets and not afraid to reach in can afford to play, and they usually just buy a super star to start with rather than weed though all the maybes. Its cheaper believe it or not lol.


Good trainers get offers all the time for pups and young dogs, because breeders want them in there hands. I haven't even owned a coon dog in a couple years now or drove by a hunt let alone attended one.......and I still get offered 10 or 20 a year. I can only imagine what the guys who are good at it get :O

Oh yea I'm sure it's very expensive. I'm well aware of that and Im a firm believer in "you get what you pay for."

There are guys out there, there just hard to find. I think most are retired or have some other means of income.

You could try Steven Brabham in Mississippi. 601-248-1914. I don't know if you could get him to do it but he is very honest and steady hard hunter. He will do exactly what he says.

He has a pen, but from what I understand, he actually shoots coons out on em on a daily basis. He traps for the state and probably averages about 15 coons per day...this allows him to put fur in their mouth...I think his price is 500 per month...you can find his contact info in the leopard cur dogs and puppy for sale page

Blackflagginit is correct, find a friend or young person who will hunt the hair off her for free or part ownership you will be happier in the end.

get ahold of tater at taters feed and hunting supply dont know if he has room for one or not but he usually can get one going pretty good. Tell him brent told you to call.

When deciding on a "prospect" I have one question I ask myself. Is it worth spending/can I recoup somewhere in the neighborhood of $1000 a month for 4-6 months on? I ask myself that rather is one of those pups somebody wants to hand me.........or a diamond in the rough I saw or heard about.

because IMO that's about the average it takes when you consider actual expense and labor. IE if I "paid" myself min wage even for actual hours in the field training, plus got a "refund" for actual expenses (feed, gas, ect ect) would the checks clear in the end? Most of the time the answer is a resounding NO.

Sure a few dogs sell, win, or mature out to be "worth" that much.........we ARE talking $4000-$6000 plus the initial cost to purchase (assuming it isn't from a breeder who just hands it off to get it in the "right" hands). I even bought one once for $1100 and turned down $25,000 for it a year later..........but more often than not, its a thousand dollar dog at the end not the other kind.....IF your lucky.

Imo a good trainer will have a much higher success rate with there pups then a hunter that just hunts coon. Doesn't mean all will turn out to be world beaters but as far as just getting the dog to tree coons. This is why I think our community needs to be more focused on improving training techniques then so worried about genetics. That should be left to the breeders, not the weekend warriors.
Every good trainer I know is always receiving calls about hunting a pup, or asking to be paid to hunt a pup, or asking just to take a pup for free if he personally will put time into it, and usually the trainer has to say no. Not because he doesn't think the pup will make it, but because he simply doesn't have the means to take on another pup.

One of the best trainers in your area, IMO, is Kyle Chase. He lives in the Kingsport, TN area. He is one of the best!
