Question

It's a dumb question and sure it's been asked a lot but here it goes. What is the difference in ukc pp and ukc hb format and style of dog? Thanks. I just don't know but just trying to learn. Thanks again

I wouldn't mind knowing myself I've only hunted with a few registered dogs that I know of everything thing was grade I guess all of them would be what's called gun dogs. At least we shot over them anyway lol

I may be wrong but HB the handlers and the judge have a say in the scoring. PP the judge has the say in the scoring and handlers do not and I believe the judge try's to stay with the hounds to see what's happening in PP. This is what I got out of reading the rules on both. Never been to a UKC only ARHA/NKC hunts so by NO means an authority on the subject.

This is a very controversial subject and one that depending on who you ask will depend upon the answer your given.
This is my opinion of the differences between the 2.
PP has a judge that does not have a dog in the cast and runs behind the hounds and judges. A good judge who can stay with the pack will often pick up a hound that continues to effect the pack in a negative manor. Such as over running the track causing a break down. This often makes people who hunt Hunting Beagle think that PP is for slower dogs. When in fact PP is designed for a hound that can control the front with accuracy. Speed is a big advantage if a hound can take the front and handle it.
Now Hunting Beagle has a hunting judge that has a dog in the cast. His duties are to score all situations and be in control of the cast. The other handlers have the ability to vote on anything that they feel is questionable during the hunt. Once dogs are running handlers position themselves to see the rabbit and score a line.
I tell you this because as you can see in PP a judge can possibly see more of the track that is being ran. In HB it is often hard to see the causes good or bad of the track.
Understand I run both and like both formats.
So what's the difference in the hounds? I believe a hound that is all about speed is better suited for Hunting Beagle than PP. A hound that works a check from the inside out is better suited for PP. BUT MOST IMPORTANT IS I believe a good gun dog can excellent in both. I have always said a hound that can win in multiple formats is probably a pretty good rabbit dog. My reasoning is that all formats credit a hound for running a rabbit the right way. Some specialize in endurance, some in accuracy, some in speed. But they all credit a hound for running a rabbit right.
So go try them both. Don't judge either by 1 hunt attend 3 of each and choose for yourself. Is one better than the other? I will answer by saying which came first the chicken or the egg?
