the perfect time to go hunting

What is the perfect time to go hunting in the Fall and winter

The old general rule when I first started coon hunting {been a long time} was to get in the woods right after dark "to hit a hot track." But I don't go by that rule anymore...I tried to see if there was a time when coons were most active, so I put cameras at all my feeders {in two different states!!} and on streams or travel areas I know coons use. What I found was that they definitely do not follow any set time to be active.
One thing interesting was that it seems like when they are active they are just about all moving, feeding and in general just "out." I found that they will feed in the early evening for two or three days, then they might be active just before sunrise for a day or two...only to move at midnight for the next four days.
The other general rule we used to go by, and this is at least partially good advice, was to hunt on a dark night. The darker the better. I now believe the best nights are those where the moon is a sliver. They definitely like it dark but they will still move on a full moon...just not as much. The old saying "never hunt on a full moon because coons don't move and everything else does" is not really true either..."everything else" likes it dark too.
Bottom line...get those dogs in the woods and hunt!!! Coons are out stompin' when they are out stompin'!!! Good hunting.

Yea but I like the full moon. Do they move much during the day? That would be great. I wouldn't need a light and getting lost would be such a problem.

I have seen more coons out in the daylight during the first hour of daylight more than any other time. I have several pictures of a coon at one of my feeders repeatedly at 3:00 in the afternoon. As to the full moon...I have only had good luck on a full moon in the bitter cold. The rest of the moon lit nights I didn't do much.

Have also notice the darker nights are best. A cloudy rainy night seems to produce e the most coon for me. On full moon I don't get out much until later in the year where I have about an hour or so before the moon peeks above the tree tops.

The best time to go hunting is whenever you can go. If family, work, health, or other things don't have you disabled from being able to go, then it's the perfect time. NEVER wait on the moon or weather. One of these days well wish we would have gone when we were able.. Happy hunting

I hunt in all sorts of weather,,rain, snow, dark, and moon,,I tree about the same in any,but the moon brings out more coyotes around my neck of the woods, had them darn things start to attack my brothers little female one moonlit night, had to hurry in there and chase them darn things off,but around here it doesn't matter if you hunt at the crack of dark, midnight,or busting daylight, you will tree coon,,,goodluck hunting
