When a dog is ready

When do y'all believe a dog is ready for the hunts? I know when they can tree their own coon but other than that what are other qualities you look for?

I think we might ask when a dog is ready and when a dog can win. Many dogs can win a hunt before they are ready for a hunt. Just my opinion.

when is dog ready for hunts

personnally I think most dogs should be held out until 2yr old. I have one that's just turning 2 i've been putting in hunts since he was 1yr. because he was treeing good and he was the best I had, but I don't think I would do that again. Ther's alot of bad habits out there to be learned, and if you get them around one that's a little mean at the tree, that's pretty hard on a pup.

When they will stay treed. They are going to have to learn to put up with a lot of BS from other dogs sooner or later. I think that they can adjust when they are young better than when they are older. They are going to have to learn to get along or go their own way. They are going to have to learn to stay away from the bullies and trash runners. I think that they learn better when they are younger. If you are going to have a comp dog then they are going to have to learn to comp hunt just as they have to learn to run a track and tree.

I am with Richard L. on this one. Exposure to Night Hunts (other dogs) is part of their training. Just like everything you do with a pup you have to control it.

There are pages of these questions on here and yes we are a group and most people in a group throw things out for their friends opinions. Nothing wrong with that. My answer is not the only answer for everyone but is for me and my young dogs. YOU HAVE TO LET THE DOG TELL YOU WHAT IT IS READY FOR. WITH A VERY YOUNG ONE EVEN IF IT IS TELLING YOU AND SHOWING YOU MASSIVE AMOUNTS OF MATURITY IT IS STILL YOUNG AND YOU HAVE TO LIMIT ITS EXPOSURE. I have litter mates that are hunted and handled differently.
