(discussion )need info on a stud to breed to (Walker) ???

I been out of coonhunting for awhile , mainly because I didn't like the direction on how and what coondogs( especially Walker's) are being bred for. Let's face it there's alot of hype in competition coonhunting and competition coonhunting has had a huge impact on how dogs are being bred. I was fortunate to see some nice COON DOGS back in late 80s and 90s... Coons are thick here so there is no need for a dog to b-line several miles deep to tree a coon. I'm looking for traits such as dog locating 2 or 3 times on the tree, checking the tree , packing with another dog or dogs, drive a track fast, accuracy. This thread is not intended to offend anyone . With all this being said I would like some input ?? What bloodlines are still consistently throwing these traits ?

Call mike edwards look up kits creek kennels best old blooded hounds ive seen go huge mouths track dog deluxe they have no problem treeing together but will split if one is wrong bigger build hounds with them big gallon jug heads me an a friend has bought four off him and every single one will run and tree coon in style all have MONSTER locates big big big dying bawls into chop or bawl chop tree dog and they all have big screaming bawl mouths on track and all four are the loudest hounds ive hunted with and they all are deadly accurate and they will tree them out of the truck or a mile deep they dont pass many coon I love his hounds

The thing to do is find you someone around your house that just pleasure hunts. someone that's been raising there own dogs for years just for them. That's what I'd do.

hm... most studs today do not claim to pack.

Sounds like you don't want a dead loner, considering that,
that would rule out skuna river, wipeout, and clover right off the bat.

You said you dont want them passing up coon, i think that is more dog dependent then line dependent but some lines are known to be harder going then others, so that would probably rule out anything with harry, lone pine, wipeout, and skuna river.

You said you wanted an older type hound, so I assuming you want more track based hound, so that would rule out, nailor, rat attack, insane, and trackman.


So I can't think of too much left in the walker breed, probably best off looking at a different breed!!!!

In all seriousness, just hunt with as many dogs as you can, when you find a female that you really like, buy a pup out of her regardless of who the owner breeds it to.
Chances are you will end up with one that has many of the same traits.

Much of what you are looking for can be found pretty easily, and some of it depends on you.

Independence is inherited, but can be quashed by gang hunting a young dog and letting them piggy back on other dogs. That goes for "go yonder" too.... Started dogs learn to run and tree by instinct, but knowing how and where to find a coon to tree is a matter of learned behavior, through repetition Again, hunting it with a close hunting dog is the key here....
