Buck skins

I know next to nothing about plots but have a few questions if someone is willing to indulge me.
a) What is the problem with having a plott that is buckskin colored? Is it just a color thing?

b) How often do they occur? Do certain lines throw them more often?

pm me if you'd rather. thanks, Doug

to answer question a) you cant register buckskins because of a vote. some say its because some one was breeding redbones into there stock. and some say it was about a breeder competing with a another breeder
b) some lines don't have them and some have a lot .I would say 1% to 2% as a hole

You should read Bob Plotts book "strike and stay". It has a lot of information about the history & theories of the plott breed & Plott family. I think in his book it claims 5% buckskins & that there have been buckskins in there family line of dogs for the last 50-100 years, I think.

I believe it was Bob Plott who said that of the 5 Plotts originally brought over to the US in the 1700s that 2 of the 5 were Buckskin colored.

I also was told by a man who had Plotts for years, that the guys out West who ran lions preferred the Buckskin dogs.
I think he said they had tougher feet.

Truth or Fiction about the Western guys? I don't know...

on page 34 UKC rule book in the breed standards any solid color is a disqualification this point has been the center of a lot fighting at more than one plott meeting some argue that allowing solid colors for dishonest people to do dishonest things with a dog that may or may not be all Plott

I'm on the east coast and bear hunt a pocahontas buckskin gyp and from my observation her feet are real tough . I'm not sure about the majority of buckskin plotts though. I wish the ukc would allow registration for them , if it's a plott it's a plott.

buckskin plotts

I think I must hold the record for "Most buckskins in a litter" I had a Weems bred buckskin that gave birth to 14 pups. 9 of this litter were buckskins! John Banks of N.C. was here at the time and said he had never heard of that many buckskins in one litter in his life.

I'd love to see a picture of those Buckskin Pups lined up when they get a little size on them.

Of course the anti-buckskin crowd might lose their breakfast over such a sight...
