Bark collar question???
Who uses bark collars and what are the pros and cons? (Besides the obvious that they quit barking haha).
Just mainly curious how it works since they get shocked by a collar when they bark, I don't want it to make them scared to bark when we r hunting and they have tracking collars on.
Opinions/experiences appreciated.
Thanks

I've used bark collar a lot. Never had any problem with dogs not wanting to bark while out hunting.
The two biggest problems I've seen is a dog getting collar smart. Not barking as soon as u put a collar on and bark right after taking it off.
The other thing is not getting the collar fitted right and rubbing the neck raw.
Very good tool when used right.

Last months issue of American Cooner has a good article by John Wick all about bark collars and their use. Definitely worth the read. I cannot figure out why Garmin doesn't make a dummy collar...that, and its use is as important as the live one. In fact, if you do it right the dummy should be used way more than the live collar. Never had any side issues that affect hunting. I currently have the Garmin Deluxe and like everything about it but the fact that they dont make a dummy.
I live in town next to the school kids are always out run and yelling I have used a bark collar on all my pups when I bring them home it takes about a day or two they know not to bark in the kennel there's no problem went we go to the woods.

I personally won't ever put one on a dog. I bought a pup from a gut that didn't pay any attention to the dog while it was on. At 5 months old the dog was treeing easy coons solo. At 8 months old he got 1st in his first pkc hunt. But the harder you hunted him the worse his mouth got. I took him to the vet and she said the bark collar messed his vocal cords up. So now I have a 2000 dollar dog with a 30 cent mouth. I know they work when used correctly but I'm not taking any chances ever!

I don't live in town and the barking doesn't really bother me as much as I'm afraid of it bothering my pup. I had a dog years ago that had the loudest mouth I had ever heard and many people agreed with me, he decided to be a kennel barker one day and within a couple months he totally lost his voice from barking and after that it never came back and you couldn't hear him 50 yards away.
This pup I have barks all the time at nothing. You can hunt him for 4 hours straight and have him exhausted and he still barks. He has a real good mouth and I just don't want him to bark it out so I'm thinking if I can nip this problem in the bud while he is young I won't have that problem in the future. But I also don't want to make him scared to bark while trailing or treeing because he will have tracking collar on
Sounds like most of you guys haven't had any problem with that issue though so maybe I'll give it a try and see how it goes.

I try to avoid using a bark collar if I can but if they are bad to bark I do have to wear one on them. When you watch them(make sure they are not rubbing the dogs neck raw) and use them right my only con is all they teach the dog to be is collar smart. Or if you have a real stubborn barker some of them can take the pain of being shocked at times.

There are many different views on these. All of my dogs wear them because I have neighbors close and I don't want to be going outside every hour to correct them for barking in the lot. When I can I do use different correction. However I have not had them to ever rub one's neck and it has not effected them anyway on game. I can take a drag in the yard and let them out of the kennel and take the collar off and they act like they have never had it on. I think they are wonderful. Also most of the time by batteries in them are dead because I forget about them, lol.
