The Truth About the Humane Society
Many people think the Humane Society is simply an organization that runs the local animal shelter, but the truth is that they are one of the largest anti-hunting organizations out there.
If you read their website and look at their annual report, you'll find the following:
- According to them, "The Humane Society of the United States is the nation's largest and most effective animal protection organization."
- Their assets are in excess of $267 million with 2013 annual income, in excess of $170 million.
- They report an expenditure of "Direct Care and Services", which I assume includes their shelters, in the amount of $31.4 million.
- Now $31.4 million is a large number, but only a portion of that is their shelters and it's only 18% of their total income, which begs the question of what the remaining 82% is spent on???
- Well, they spend $55 million on "Advocacy and Public Policy"
- And according to a statement on their website, here's what they think of us... "Houndsmen often treat the dogs like hunting equipment rather than cherished pets or members of the family. When dogs don’t hunt well or get old, sick, or injured, some houndsmen shoot them or abandon them to starve or be hit by a vehicle."
- They also write, "Hound hunters use packs of dogs, sometimes 40 or more, to chase bears, wolves, coyotes, bobcats, cougars, deer or other animals until they try to climb a tree, or until the dogs catch them and tear them apart. The hunting dogs themselves are frequently injured or killed during the hunt. Bears, for instance, are very poor distance runners and often may tire and be attacked by dogs before the pack trees the bear."
To me, these statments mean that, they don't care about the accuracy of their statements or showing their ignorance publicly! They say we "often" treat our dogs this way. But there are millions of houndsmen and tree dog owners, so I wonder how many of us were in their study??? How many big game hunters really release 40 dogs?!? And I for one, with very limited experience, have seen many bears outrun several packs of hounds, so where do they get off calling them "poor distance runners"??? And this means that the HSUS is not our friend, and probably more accurately described as an enemy of the houndsmen.
So why do I write this... becasue an animal shelter is good thing. A place to keep our dogs "off the streets" when they are lost, or taking lost dogs in when they're sick or injured, is a noble cause. But, before you consider donating financially to the local Humane Society, you may consider what the majority of those dollars will be used for, because it would appear that most of it, goes to attack us.
Does that mean you don't help the local animal shelter... not necessarily. But if you are so inclined, I would donate collars or leashes, or dog food, before giving them any money.
I'm not saying all of us are perfect... but making gross statements about us, as a whole, with I'm convinced, very little investigation or data, is reckless for a non-profit that is entrusted with the appropriate allocation of thier donor's funds. And they have specifically sponsored anti hound-hunting legislation!

It was pointed out on the Coonhound forum, that many shelters across the country call themselves the "Humane Society" but are actually independently owned and operated with no affiliation with the HSUS.
So you may want to determine the affiliation, if any, for your local shelter, before deciding whether or not you want to support them, or how you want to support them.

this is good information to have thanks for reminding us. Also several years ago Ken-l Ration as well as Ralston Purina were big contributor's to the HSUS in effect taking the funds that dog owners spent to use against us. We campaign against their support. Haven't had direct info since
