Barrel Dog House

Anyone using the plastic barrel dog house? What bennefits or problems? Any good in the north snow country?

I personally never used them. I have heard of people burying them on a hillside to help insulate it. I do see that Rich from the Mt. Man show keeps his hounds in barrel boxes and he's in Montana with just straw in the bottom off the barrel.

If we get the snow like last winter you probably won't need insulation. The snow will do it.

I made some when I lived in NY that worked well. I cut a 12x15 hole in one end then made a sheet metal door frame that stuck out 5" on top & sides. Then I put piano hinge on the cut out piece and installed it in the frame so it had a self closing door. On the opposite end take out the fill cap and make a sheet metal cover that bows out on the bottom so it can breathe. You can glue a piece of burlap over the vent hole first to keep snow from blowing in.
I drilled a few 1/4" holes in the bottom to drain if they got wet inside. I put
cedar and grass hay in winter, then cedar with ground corn cob in summer.

They hold up well. I built mine nearly 30 years ago and they are still in use today. I think they cost me $7 to make at the time.

I have a couple that a friend gave me.The only problem I have seen with em is the dogs roll em around occasionally. The end I cut out I left about a quarter of the barrel on the end to hold the bedding in. Works great for me.

put you 2 4x4 skids cross ways on the ends and anchor them down and they stay put pretty good.

I am a bit confused regarding having a dog house and i am really looking for a house having fun & functional eco-friendly pet accessories which the dog will enjoy a lot......

Posted by brogy on 09-01-2014 03:15 PM:

I used them for a few years. I put 2x4 skids across the bottom & some drain holes in the bottom to help with the condensation.
I used straw for bedding & kept them out of the wind. My entire kennel setup was covered by a lean to & closed on 3 sides.
I had no trouble with them. Young dogs might chew on them but couldn't destroy them.
I've known others that kept them out in the open.
Keeping the opening out of the wind is key.
For $15 a barrel that are easy to move, easy to clean, plenty warm, & almost indestructible it's hard to beat them for dog houses.

My plastic barrel dog houses. Framed them up with 2X4s and used pickets from a fence I salvaged to close them in. I live in the Deep South so no insulation necessary but there's plenty of room for it otherwise

I have some. One thing I did to mine, was to drill some holes in the bottom for drainage. If not, when they get water in them, it just puddles.

I was at 2013 Redbone days at Holmesville Ohio. Their was fella their that was selling them, and appeared to have plenty of buyers. He also donated one to the auction, and it went quick, so from that it appears people like them.

I stand my up right dog has a flat place for bedding and lay flat

I've had mine for 12 yrs. and been through several wooden houses in that time.

I don't like this "mount" but I thought I'd show an extension over the door.

Don't make your door that big or that low. Robert's are fine for Texas but they won't hold enough straw for a Michigan winter.

id say thier ok in the warmer states but in the states where it gets down with single didgit wind chill don't think they would be anygood dog could freeze to death in 1 i myself wouldn't put a dog in a barrel i will stick to insulated wood boxes

I live in Indiana and we can have some cold winters, I have used plastic barrels for 20+ years, never had a dog freeze, I stuff them with grass hay/Cedar chips to help control fleas from laying eggs inside like hollow straw cedar smells good, mine set with 4"x6" running long ways to raise them off the concrete floors for cleaning reasons, I stuff them full the dogs (Feist and hounds) burrow in and love them, when they come out in the winter you can feel the dogs and they are warm! I place 2"x4" long ways on top and mount plywood so they can lay in the summer and soak up the 5' fan's wind.
