-- A finished dog? (http://forums.ukcdogs.com/showthread.php?threadid=928384351)
A finished dog?
I see posts for started and finished dogs but what exactly makes a dog finished? Has it reached its max capacity for learning? Is it 100% accurate and needs no further training? i hope to get some good responses!
To me it means its consistent at a certain level most of the time. Its pretty much broke..runs and trees coon consistently....but the overall ability from dog to dog can vary GREATLY.

I consider a finished dog to be trash free and can tree coons with or without help.

To me a finished hound is not one that should have a coon it will have a coon every time. As well as what has been said above

A good well broke dog does the same every time you cut them loose.Thats 3-4 yrs old for the average dog.Because most guys don't hunt enough to finnish them..((Very few)) dogs under 2 are well broke dogs. They might do good in hunts but they are not well broke dogs..

A FINISHED hound is a hound that does what it's owner will tolerate. Every owner has a different opinion on what a finished hound is. If you don't believe this go hunt with hunters that have what they call FINISHED hounds and you will see a BIG difference.

Too me a finished hound is just that. Finished!!! Good or bad its to the stage it is what its gonna be. Some finished hounds aint worth the feed it took to get them their and some are real coon dogs. All this depends on the way they was
Bred and if the person walking behind them had enough sense to train the dog. Jmo

How often should a dog be hunted in order to reach a finished state? Obviously this will vary by hound but what is the ideal amount of time spent hunting to get the dog in prime condition without burning it out? Or can you even burn your dog out?
I consider one to be finished after it draws its last breath of air...

i aint never had one what i call finnish,as soon as i say my dog is finished he will up and do something that a finnished dog aint supposed to do.all the dogs ive ever owned needed improveing and iam always trying the best i can to make them better.
An older coonhunter, I'm pretty old myself, told me 3 years or 300 coons, unless you feed only coons feet. Then 2 years 200 coons and a skinny dog.
