How many?

How many of yall's dogs been snake bit during the summer? I have always been told not to hunt during the summer because of this. I am hunting this summer, and I always wondered how many dogs actually get bit.

I have hunted all my life around rice fields and creeks filled with cotton mouths. I hunt all summer and I have had probably 5 or 6 get bit in 30 years. I have had more yard dogs bit then that running around the house.

I wouldn't worry about the dog as much as I'd worry about yourself, or in my case, the kids. I've had several beagles bitten in the head/neck region, by copperheads, and they basically swell up, then get better. I've had several coon dogs bit as well, with the same results. Swelling is about it. Last year I had one bit in the thigh. He is a big dog, and judging from the height of the bite, and the width of the fang marks, it was a rattlesnake. He was ready to roll in a week or so. I did have a walker gyp got bit in the face, and she swoll up more than any other dog I've ever seen. Made me think rattler. She did the same as the rest, but the swelling was way worse. She was fine though. However, for a few weeks, it was like she was having to relearn how to use her nose, or didn't have it all back. Anyway, she got back to normal. Dogs are way tougher than we are. You're going to the hospital. The dog just needs some water, Benadryl, and rest. I'm sure there are worse cases than what I've personally experienced, but I don't sweat a snake bit dog. They seem to be fine in pretty short order. Now a buddy of mines wife has a purse dog, and it got pretty jacked up by a copperhead. It's gonna be fine though. Just taking way longer to heal. It ain't no hound though.

I had my nosey pup vaccinated 2 weeks ago with a booster due in two weeks. Not taking chances.

SNAKES

My one year old, Bo, got bit by a cottonmouth July 1st. He had just treed a coon I put out to him and recut him by a beaver pond and in a few minutes he came back and could barely walk with head hanging and eyes rolling back in his head. Thought he was a goner for sure but an hour or so later at home he seemed better. Got bit on right back paw and it was swollen bad for 3 days along with that leg. Gave him 3cc penicillin twice a day for 3 days. Started hunting him again this Tuesday night and he is fine.
