Tracking question??

When I do drags or let a coon go for my pup he doesn't put his nose to the ground. I think he's trying to wind it instead and it isn't working. Is there anyway to correct this or do I just have to hope he comes out of it?

You need to provide a little more information about your pup in order to get a better answer. Is your pup 6 months old or 2 years old? He is been running loose some or all of the time or is it always kenneled? He he been in the woods at all? How much training have you provided up to this point!?

pup

He's six months old and hasn't run loose. I bring him to the woods a few times a week for a couple hours at a time to let him run and do some drags with him. I've let two coon go right in front of him he chases but don't sniff the ground. I'm just wondering what I could do to help get his nose down

I'm no expert, but 6 months old is still real young. I've had pups do the same thing as yours. Keep doing what your doing. By the kill season you ought to see a big difference. Think about it like this. Right now your pup is riding a big wheel, having fun and gaining experience. Soon he will be riding a bike with training wheels. And within a year he ought to be doing it on his own and know a few tricks.

You might try wetting the coon down real good before turning it loose or putting some coon scent on it. Anything to make it leave a strong hot trail.

At this point, I'd skip the drags and turned loose coon and stick the rest of what you are doing, the woods time. At his age, just you and him in the woods much as possible is hard to beat. Two months from now, progress to the drags and turned loose coon possibly.

For the replies. I'm gonna keep trying, and try to put more time in the woods with him. Would it hurt anything to bring him at night?

i usally do i usually only have 1 pup or dog so if i want to hunt.

don't let the coon go where he can see it . when they see the coon run off they are naturally gonna try and just sight chase it and not use their nose . you'll lose a few coons but the dog should improve . I never let my pups see anything run off , just turn it loose remove the cage and bring the pup back in about ten or fifteen minutes .

Ok, that makes sense. Should I show it to him first to get him pumped up or not at all?

after my pups have bayed up a coon in a roll cage a couple times at the house and maybe wooled around with a hide and run a few drags that's it . then i'll trap some coons and turn them loose for the pups to trail . win or lose they either got it or they ain't .
