Pup training ??

I have a 5 month old pup that is starting to track a lil. I have let out cage coon a couple times and he has treed it. We can't shoot one out till middle of nov so he is not getting the normal reward. But is getting loved and petted every time he does good. Will this be a good thing to keep going or what other options do I have? I have seen one yr old dogs get so used to coons shot out during kill season to them for rewards. and when kill season is over they get to leaving tree cause no reward is at the end. Any help would be great thanks in advance

Mine started bout that age i just took the calender off the wall and loaded the gun!!lol

Thanks guys for the info. My son let him off the chain today to run some energy off and he treed the coon with let loose last night for him. He was at the other end of the pond so he moved during the night. Which was about 150 yrds the other way. We could see his tail hanging out of the tree.

5 month old dog now will be 9-10 months old come killin season...thats about the right time to start most dogs...5 months is young IMO...i like 9-12 months and killing season so i can knock the first 20-30 down to them...legally...fall is better hunting too IMO..get a pup in a good corn patch and its easy to get a good hot track going and they will usually pop up a tree on the edge of the field...


and if your killing them now you risk killing a sow and loosing her and the entire litter...can hammer a coon population quickly by doing that...



just not worth it IMO....to each his own...


talking about breaking the law on a public forum is also not the brightest thing to do...

say what you will..."its just a coon..." blah blah blah...its still poaching...and depending on the laws and everything you could loose your license...your gun...your truck...your DOG...

still worth it??? its not always a 100$ ticket if you get caught...especially when it comes to poaching...even if its "just a coon" some states can seize everything used in the act...which means your truck...gun...dog...etc...

i would just pet him up real good when he trees a coons that u can see and lead him back to the truck.treeing coons is bred in a dog.ive wasted alot of coons years back thinking that dog just need a coon shot out to him,then it was he just need a few coons knocked out to him then he will be a coon treeing machine,it never worked for me.i figured out what works for me, get a pup from a long line of coon dogs no matter which breed and youll have a better chance of getting a coon dog.

I haven't killed any coons I just being lettin them go so he can tree them. I would rather not have te dog gets used to getting a coon at the end cause he is hopefully going to be a comp dog. So I will keep letting them go and petting him up real good.

Skeets - this dog is from a good line of coondogs I got him from chad Mccoin who has done his homework and has his dogs rolling. My pup hadn't been messed with until I got him about a month ago. First day I had him showed him a tail and a road kill and it's been on since then. I been taking him with my older dog and he will get on tree with them. Just working on him figuring out how they get there. Once he gets that figured out it's going to be a good time in the woods

If he is treeing fine, I would avoid petting him up, over excitement on tree leads to, fighting Chewing sticking etc.

Dogs chase deer and no one ever knocked deer out to the dog?

Think about that, then think about this?

Does a dog use his eyes as a primary sense or his nose?
Can we smell what he can, is it possible that just the act of using his nose to trail and chase is enough fun in itself to cause a dog to fall in love with his job? Is
it possible that just the strong scent of being right upon its prey is the same as seeing the prey to a dog?
If your dog lacks something more often then not knocking coon out won't make to much of difference. Only hard woods time, that being said I believe the best time knock one out is when there not real confident or unsure.

I've found in the summer my dogs catch a couple on the ground anyways, usually when that happens it's enough to imprint the dog in such away they don't need any.

However mine have a little more tree power then most so I don't find the need to reward them at the tree as often.

Imo most guys I know harvest too many but that's my opinion.

mr gunner keep on doing what your doing,if hes bred right he will make u a coon dog, training these ole mutts aint rocket science just use a little common sence lol.if he was mine i dont think i would hunt him to hard right now,hes just 5 months old so make it fun for him.i would also bond with your dog,pet him and talk to him everyday become best friends with each other,he come more likely wanting to please you that way and if he does something u dont like a little scolding will go a long ways.good luck with your dog and i hope you and your boy trees lots of coons with him.
