Running Loose..when to end it?

I have a young here that came to me as backward as heck. I figured that running loose may help it come along a little bit. Well its been almost 3 months now and the thing hasn't left the yard. It has a trail beat down between the kennel and the house and will sleep in front of the garage door to the house when we are home but won't come inside. It basically just hangs out all day. When we leave it comes down to the driveway, but never follows.

Is it worth just leaving it loose longer or is it time to put it up? Maybe once or twice it has been trailing whatever close to the house but generally thats only for a few minutes. I would like to start hauling it hunting but having a hard time talking myself into a dog that doesn't have enough motivation to even leave the yard.

Any thoughts?

JMO, but you have already given it longer than I would have without showing some desire to go.

take it out hunting away from the house and see what you have , heck when we were kids our old hounds laid around the house all the time till we came outside carrying the 22 rifle and a light . and they were some hell fire hide dogs .

I agree, i just like a dog with enough drive to go hunting alone....but that smith and wesson part is good advice.

The last 2 I had here were the same way. Never left the yard except maybe to chase us down the road. I had timber to hunt all the way around me, a pond below the house, neighbors hounds running junk all the time, and on occasion I'd be hunting right behind the house, all sorts of temptation for a young dog to get into trouble & neither ever cared to leave the mowed grass.
One that was born here was culled & the other was given away to be a yard dog because that's all she cared to be.

Ron , pups running loose is what we do here . Everyday & many nights we walk pups into timber surrounding the house . They do work better and get started faster in groups or with an older gamey dog to start with then typically start venturing out even if everyone else may be napping in the shade . Having an abundance of wildlife coming in usually helps too coons , squirrels , rabbits . If you don't already - keep bird feeders with sunflower seeds in your yard (squirrels love them) & coon feeders with corn in the timber near your house . To get coons an other critters to start coming in - take a plastic jar of peanut butter and nail lid to tree near where you've placed the feeder , cut a section of the bottom jar off so coons can get to the peanut butter . Be sure to nail up high enough deer can't get to it .
Many pups have what we call a light bulb moment (like you've flipped a switch) and go from nothing to you can't keep up with them . Hope you're pup has hers and good luck !

I have two hounds that dont have a kennel, I keep my female in the house while she's in heat (and I have always done this) and they both have a wireless fence system. When we had our mastiff here he had free range, but would never wander too far, but far enough that if the hounds collars were dead, they would take off, but now that he is gone, only one needs a collar on and the other will stick around home. Now both of these hounds, do and will hunt alone, BUT home is home, that is where they get fed.

Now, I'm no professional, but it sounds to me like your pup just has no reason to get gone from home, his pack is there, his water is there, he gets fed there... now I dont know about you, but if I were him, heck, I'd have no reason to leave either.

How old is this "youngin"? has he ever been to the woods at night? if not, take him, if he just hangs around, well, now you have your answer as to his drive, but if he doesnt, well, then he just likes to hang out at home.

The pup is coming on 10 months old. We do have lots of rabbits and birds in the yard and she will look there way and on occasion bark at them from 50 or 75 yards away.

I have lived at the same house for a few years now and most of the dogs I had that ended up treeing a coon did it right out of the yard.....I guess I just kinda expected her to do that same.

She has been hunting a few times and she hangs with the old dog.....or more like chases her. I don't think she has any clue what she is doing but she sure can run.

I'm in know way calling you out for this but I think we make a mistake when we try and use our thought process to try to figure out why a dog is doing something. They do not think the same as we do and they do not do things for the same reason that we do. In my opinion a dog going hunting should be the most natural thing that they do. Above all else food, companionship, breeding or anything else they should want to go hunting.

There is only one thing that will cause me to cull a pup. Thats when I decide I dont like them. There is a lot of things that can put them on that list but thats what it comes down to. So When you decide you dont like her then move her down the road. Until then just keep giving her a chance

I totally understand, and I'm sorry but I believe a dogs will and need to survive and reproduce will outweigh their drive to hunt almost any day. I'll bring my female in heat down with your male that you claim would rather hunt than breed, I'll tie her to the tailgate and you cut your male dog, lets see who wins that disagreement, and if you do, I'll admit I was wrong, but you must do the same

Not to argue but I know she will go hunting instead.

Seriously though I have seen several dogs that were hunted on cast and found to be in heat at the end of the hunt without male dogs bothering them.
