A question for you breeders

How many of you check a male puppy for both nuts before you sell them? If so how many months/weeks old are usually you able to tell. Let me hear it lol

Posted by HOBO on 06-06-2014 11:40 AM:

Since no one has answered I'm guessing no one checks before selling them.

Thank you Hobo. The reason I asked was I bought a pup at 10 weeks old and it had one nut and the breeder said it had 2 nuts but one has mysteriously pulled a Houdini. Just wondering if that's normal. I payed good money for a GREAT breed pup who is worthless IMO being one nutted. It happens but is this common?

P.s my dad has 10 week old pups as we speak and there are only 4 males no females. I looked, no sack...how can u tell how many nuts they have....lmao.....zero balls

Posted by pamjohnson on 06-06-2014 01:17 PM:

im not sure at what age the nuts drop but i do know if u get a pup and 1 nut doesn't drop the breeder should make the deal right for you. just common courtisy.

is there evidence that you can't breed a male with one testicle?

I've seen young dogs in the puppy class get nervous and pull one up when being showed. I know a judge was going to write one up for being monorchid/cryptorchid. While the dog was on the bench it only had one testicle. A half hour later the guy brought the dog up and, sure enough, the other was in the sack. It's not common but it does happen.

At 10 weeks old I wouldn't worry a thing about it. Most drop earlier but it's not uncommon for a pup to be up to 6 months old before the descend. Also, the pup can still compete and earn championship points in any Coonhound event other than Bench Shows.

A dog with one testicle can still breed and have pups. They might not have as high a sperm count as one with two but I don't know that for a fact. I do know there have been many dogs bred who have only had one.

I've raised several litters of pups and have never checked any of mine before selling them. No one that has ever bought a pup from me has ever called me and said that both of their pups hadn't dropped. As Paul said I wouldn't worry to much about a ten week old puppy, now if he's a year old and it hasn't dropped then you might have reason for concern.

This one is now 8 months old. I was just saying for a example my dad has 10 week old pups and you can't even tell they got a "set". I've read and heard having one nut lodged up there CAN cause health problems down the road such as testicular cancer ect. I wouldn't breed the dog. That's all, just a question. Thank you guys for the replies it was helpful!

Pam I bought this pup right at 10-11 weeks old. and I sold him to a guy north of me. I had no clue about it. He called me back saying it had only one nut. I gave him his money back and I got the dog back...I figured no need to screw a guy and get a bad reputation. Thanks

I check all my pups. Its hard to find on small pups but I've always been able to find both of them except for one pup a few years back who just had one. I wasn't sure what to do with him. I thought about culling or castrating him and mentioned something about that to the sire owner. He like to had a fit so I didn't do either. Obviously he was the low pick pup so I kept and started him myself. Long story short, he was one of the best dogs I ever produced and he was bred. I have yet to hear of him producing a pup with 1 testicle.

In a perfect world, I'd select against such a dog when breeding but imo the coonhound world has bigger problems to overcome than whether there are 1 or 2 nuts.

I assume you are worried about breeding the dog . Not to derail the thread but the thread but the majority of those with two nuts don't need to be bred anyway

Why wouldn't you check the pup out before you buy it, do you make sure the pup has both eyes, straight legs or a good bite. Why wouldn't you check for both nuts if you were worried about it.

I probably would have checked for all of that if he come from Arkansas. Other than that I've never had this problem. To me he is what I don't want. For other people they may not care.

You must be a liberal, make a mistake and then try to blame someone else for your mistake. He is not what you want because he has one nut or you decided you want something else so you want your money back on this one. No sense being a smartallick but I can play that too.

I will be strait up honest and tell ya I never checked any of the pups I raised......not that there were a ton of them, only a handful...but I never heard of one that came from here having a problem or that problem in the bloodlines so I guess it wasn't an issue either way

my first litter, the male I kept had two, would run and play, had 1. I had to keep pulling it down for several months until the membrane closed so it wouldnt go back up. I figured thats why he loves me so much now!!!

you can find them when small. I check mine. other than that one, they've all had 2.

Hey gunslinger seems to me bonehead did a good deed by giving the guy his money back some guys would have just said it will drop or just not returned his calls. Most people like myself aint worried about testicals on a dog in the beginning all i am worried about is getting to training.

Posted by gunslinger266 on 06-12-2014 01:21 PM:

Yeah he did the right thing just wasnt no call in the Arkansas crack he made. I wasnt being a jerk, just saying why not look at these things before you buy if it makes a difference.
