cold nose

if a dog is shown to be cold nosed, is it that he can smell better than another dog or does he just have the brains to figure out what to do with a old track.

It's more the excitability factor rather than actually nose power. Brains is the factor that allows the dog to know if he can move a track or stand on his head.

In my opinion a cold nosed dog can smell an older track than a hot nosed dog. Not a better nose but just a different type of nose. But I don't think just because a dog is colder nosed that it means he is slower on track. I have seen Some dogs smell an old track but won't open on it until it warms up.

This is a subject that is debatable and is debated in other threads. Some guys will argue all dogs can smell older tracks but don't get excited by them so they move on, while other dogs will get more excited by an old track, and choose to try work out.

Others will argue, that not all dogs are equal in nose power, and simply cant smell an older track.

I think it's a little bit of both. I also believe a colder nosed dog will take much longer to be finished out because they spend more time on tracks that are harder to run. They tend to also struggle on hotter tracks not knowing which way to go because it all smells the same. Hence the term more nose then brains. I believe the only solution for this is to pound them in the woods. I have noticed sometimes hunting them with an other dog will increase there want to, to get there first and will cause them to drive themselves to be faster on track.

On the other hand some dogs just won't be as fast as another, but unless you just want to start over, the only option left is to pound them in the woods.

there is a great difference in dogs smelling abilities you can breed the nose right off of a hound which I believe many have done. the best test for nose ability is take your hound that burns these spring and summer tracks up. hunt them in heavy frost or snow this winter and see how they run and tree then. I have seen many dogs that can track and tree good in the summer but couldn't find a coon if it was riding on its back in the winter. and I have seen dogs that can run a track like its butts on fire in the summer and do the same thing consistently in the winter.

then you all that say that there is no cold nose dogs then why when you have 4 dogs out there and one dog can run a track, and the other3 do not bring a bark why is that ? ( they can not smell it that is why)
why can one beagle run a rabbit on ice and snow and the others can not bring a bark .
the noise has been bred out of a lot of the breeds out there IMO because everyone want a pop up dog one that looks for a hot track to run because its all about the score cards not coon treeing. JMO

Skip, I agree totally.

Many, many years ago when Steve Fielder was still working for ukc, he wrote an article for CB about dogs smelling ability. It seems that there a kit being offered for sale at the time that would determine if your dog was hot, medium or cold nosed. If I remember right he took a plot of his(Bronco?), blindfolded it and passes canisters of this stuff below the dogs nose. He tried it on other dogs too I guess. Anyway, you look for any type of reaction from the dog. Depending on which canister the dog reacted to determined the dogs "smelling power". Anyone else remember this article? Easy enough test to do if a guy wanted to. Based on that I think different dogs can smell different aged tracks. If you need to know, Steve's dog reacted to the canister for, you guessed it, the coldest nose.

Anyone who actually thinks that all dogs have the same ability to smell things, you are sadly mistaken. I beg to differ. I have had a dog that would consistently tree coons that other dogs never knew existed. I hunted this dog on nite ch cast with titled dogs that COULD NOT SMELL WHAT HE SMELLED....He was also deadly accurate....now if you hunted him off of feeder buckets and hot tracks he could be beat, but he would still win his share of those too.....if them coons wasn't moving and layed up......I can not remember ever losing with him on those kind of nights....that was 20 plus years ago....the nice thing is, I just met a man yesterday that has a linebred stud that is off of his sire...... I'm gonna get me another one like that......I will be back on track to embarrass hot nosed dogs again

EFranks, I hunt one a whole lot like that now.
