deer chase
In around 50 years of hunting tonites hunt was one of the strangest.Turned my plott hound Sampson loose around 11pm.In order to describe what happened next i need to describe the territory i was hunting.I was traveling south on a blacktop road and turned left on a gravel road.As i made the turn i spotted a set of eyes about a 100 yards out in the field. This is the same field i will turn loose in after going up over a small hill and into the next hollow. The timber im turning loose in is around 100 to 200 yards wide and a mile or more long.I didnt think anything about the eyes i had seen, figured either a coon or a deer,no big deal. This narrow timber is also rough with much brush and brush piles.Anyway, back to the hunt.I cut Sampson south while sitting on the tail gate and he opened right away.He worked a little bit out in the field and then went into the timber. As im sitting on the tail gate listening i had my ultra(gotta plug this super light)on dim and spotted a set of eyes coming towards me maybe 70 yards away out in the field.I turned the light up and realized it was a big doe deer.It crossed my mind at that point,i wish i had some deer hunters here to see how scared the deer was of my dog.But when i turned my light on high i could tell that bothered the deer and she took off west up over the hill and i figured that was that.At the same time i could tell by the cracking of the brush Sam was in a bad spot.Maybe 30 seconds went by and out of the cornor of my eye i just caught the butt of the doe going in the brush right at Sam.Suddenly the brush really started poping and cracking and i could tell the deer had attacked Sam.While this waS going on i heard a fawn bleat and realized the doe had hid her baby in the brush pile. After a short battle Sam moved out of the brush pile and headed south and the deer came back out in the open field.I waited a little while,Sam had worked about 180 yards south.I decided to walk in and catch him and call it a nite.As i went in and caught him the mama deer followed me at i guess around a 100 yards snorting and stomping and letting me know she wasnt happy. So i had a deer chase but the deer chased my dog!
