This Question is for the Older Generation

How many out there has hunted with the old dogs from years past, such as Hayes Ramblin Red Ace, Max Hunters Timber Chopper, Tru Two, or the original Woodpecker? If anyone out there has been in the woods with any of these dogs or other dogs from our past, please tell us how this older generation compares to the dogs that we are hunting now. Dont sugar coat it, state facts and tell us the differences between the generations. If you have been in the woods with several of these old dogs, then rank them for us. Thanks and God Bless.

I hunted with a Old dog called Butch one time. He was slow as they come but he had a big mouth but light colored eyes. He was a once in a lifetime dog and was out of a cross made in KY. I hope this helps. I also think that most of the hounds I have today is slightly better than OL'Butch. Bwahahahahahahahahahaha.... All in all Butch was a once in a lifetime dog. I will never hunt with another one identical to him.lol

I haven't hunted with Timber Chopper, True Too or Woodpecker even though I have seen these hounds and knew Max Hunter and Milton Strain and know they were great hounds. But Ace on the other hand is a differant matter. My cousin Terry Hayes owned him and I hunted with him several times. When Terry bought him he told me I had to hunt with this new hound he had bought. He said he had never hunted with a dog that treed like that! I went hunting with them and Terry was right I hadn't ever heard a dog tree like that, before or since regardless of the breed. Ace barked at least 120 barks a minute, with no pauses regardless if he had been treed 5 minutes or 2 hours. We counted him and recorded him several times. When you were on a nite hunt and he got treed everyone in the cast got up and listened. Their full attention was on that red dog spitting out tree barks as hard as possible. He wasn't just a tree dog either. He hunted hard, was a good strike and track dog but it was the way he treed that that made him unforgetable. It turned out he was a real reproducer too. I crossed my Kate (ARCHA HOF) female on him twice and check out what kind of hounds they turned out to be. He was a great hound in my opinion and I feel lucky to have been able to hunt with him and breed to him.

That could answer your question that are still checking the oxygen level in the atmosphere don't have a computer. Now I'm not sure, but I hope that Danny and Robbie "may have" hunted with a few. Having did a little comp hunting in the early 60's to early 90's a few of the bigger changes are nose-open on track-and hounds that pack. Now a hot nose -- silent -- independent "dog" can tree coon, but I don't feed a "dog" just to listen to it bark up a tree. I like to but them down on a 6 hour old coyote track and work it up to a jump and I don't want to have to follow it on some GPS screen, but by the voice they were born with. And the same with hunting coon, I like to get out in the morning with a couple hounds and have them work an old track--sure this time of year we can end at a den or brush pile, but if they do it the way old Ace, Woodpecker or TC did it --I'm happy.

Unfortunately my generation was to young to have been given the oppurtunity to hunt with legends like Ace or Timber Chopper, dogs that have played such a huge role in our breed.
A question for the guys that hunted with these dogs, "Do you think we are hunting dogs of that caliber today?"
Also, can anyone post Ace's 3 generation pedigree?

Ron, Terry had the cassettes and if you contact him he might be able to get his hands on them. Now for the question are our hounds better today than the hounds of days past here is my opinion. I don't think they are better or worse. A great hound is a great hound regardless of what generation they come from. I think if Ace, Timber Chopper,Tru Too or Woodpecker were young open registered dogs today I think they would still be dominating hounds capable of accomplishing the same thing they did in their day. Now what I do think is the percentage of good hounds from each litter is better today and this I feel is due to many successful breeding programs around the country. Smart researched breedings is the reason in my opinion. Breeders are much more seletive and better educated in genetics than we were back then. The knock on redbones back in the 60's when I started competition hunting is they lacked the go it took to compete with the other breeds. We had excellant hounds that were great track and tree dogs that were consistant but hunters going to a hunt every weekend wanted a dog that would hunt as deep and quickly as the competition. Our hunters and breeders I think have accomplished this. This is good if you want to compete but several excellant redbone breeders still breed for hounds that handle better and hunt with you. The redbone breed is very versitle and I like that.

Sorry not that old

I'm not that old. But can say that today the Redbone breed has "more" good dogs than in the 80's and 90's. That being said. I believe the dogs that were good in the 80's were just as good as dogs today.
Example: Alger Morgans GRNTCH Smokey MT Brandy could hang with Bellars Pac-Man in the 80's (and did). If those dogs could compete today, I think they would win just as much.
Technology and better communication (much quicker) has helped make more good dogs from more good crosses.
The cream of the crop has not gotten any better yet. Maybe it will some day, I hope.

I am 37 years old, and through out the years I have learned so much from hunting and talking to the generations before me. When I first got married, 10 years ago, My wife asked me why I never hunted with guys my own age, she said everybody you hunt with is so much older then you. Well......... My response to her was this. I enjoy hunting with those guys because they teach me new things every night out, they tell stories that make me laugh, they give me guidance and suggestions that cant be learned from a book or a video, and they are in the woods because they love the sport and they love their hounds and not becuse they want to get out and run around all night. The stories and help that I have received from so many over the years has helped me to become a better hunter and breeder, and lord knows I need it. If it wasnt for you guys, I would never know anything about the dogs from yesteryear, and those dogs are what have made the breed what it is today!! Keep sharing and a great BIG Thanks to all those that have taken the time to hunt with me and share stories with me about hounds from years ago.

First of all Rob and Richard I was like Davy Crockett, only 3 when I won 1985 hunter of the year. I have hunted with some good ones both then and now .I guess I appreciated the hounds of yesterday more mainly because I was able to get to them better. I will say this : I like the style of hound with a good BAWL mouth on the track ,a nice distinctive locate and a steady chop. (well heck who don't) I find that the track mouth on many dogs today is hideous. My Buster dog would be the talk of the cast after a hunt win or lose just because is was the loudest dog most people had ever heard. He was sired by Ace. Let me ask this : How much would anyone reading this be willing to pay for a straw of semen from Hayes Rambling Red Ace?

so right about mouth, I would say that Terry Finder had a male by the name of Gun that had the biggest-longest bawl I have ever heard on a hound of any breed. Made 2 trips down to his place with Cheta II to get pups out of Gun with no luck, wish I knew than what I know now, I would have tried his Wrighter VII (Bobby) the second time. After hunting with Bobby over years later, Cheta and him would have done just fine having Red Ace in the mix with the strong Lufcy/Blakesley blood.

I never got to hear Old Zack, but I would have to say that Gr Nt Farr's Ramblin Red Little Zack had the loudest prettiest mouth that I have heard. I have never heard a locate as nice as his.

And Mr Burt, I guess that it is a growing up Southern thing. I guess that you have never heard of Fess Parker either.

Is there anyone still around that got to hunt with Go Man Sam? What kind of mouth did he have? I know that there are a lot of people that still remember Hoffmeister's Rusty Red. What did he sound like?

Gun's Sire was out of Wrighter V and a TC female and his Dam was Billy Sue who was ot of Roy's Captain Kid and Billy Jo. Billy Jo was out of Chickahominy Max and Blakesley's Wild River Rose.
