Strategy in comp hunts???

I have a very nice young hound made him nite champion in a few hunts in the dead of winter and he is only 20 months old. He is a VERY last strike dog but Is going to be deep and by him self EVERY time. Question is all the other dogs in the cast tree together and they come off a tree and I hear my dog deep treed. Should I tree him and leash lock the cast or should I wait to tree him and let the cast cut loose and leave the strike at 25 as long as I can? I have had this happen a few time just wondering what most you guys thought was the best way to handle this.

Lockem up

Less time for them to tree coons

if u are going to keep hunting the same woods and he or she will be by them self and have a coon leave it at 25. but if u are only making one drop and moving to a new spot leash lock them so they can not tree one up on u. in the end it up to u how u want to play the game.

Always always leash lock the cast. They can't score points when there dogs are on the lead.

I thought they changed that rule, can you still leash lock?

Any time you can leash lock. Do it.

Leash Lock

in UKC if a 4 dog cast 3 dogs are treed one still out while shining the 3 dogs tree the other dog is declared treed the 3 dogs are leash locked... but lets say that 2 of the dogs are declared treed and two aren't.. one of the other 2 at large dogs is declared treed while shining the two dogs tree which would leave one dog still at large then the two dogs that treed first has an option to turn loose or not after their shine time.

If they have a coon leash lock them. If they do not make them cut. If one of them has more points you have to gamble on the next drop. If they took minus or circle make them cut for 25.

cut

An absolute last strike dog never ever wants to give anything a chance to come back in at 100 strike. Make um cut and watch them start screaming hopefully they get struck you tree and he is deep enough they cant cover in time but are there, then they draw minus LOL.

You would never want to give them the opportunity to get some of your tree.
Lets say the tree they made was circle. You go to your tree and score a coon. You are now up 150+. The rest of the night you take last strike and first tree you win the cast.
If they had a coon on the first tree why would you want to give them the opportunity to get some of your tree? They would get just that much more ahead of you.
Don't try and get to fancy with the handling. If your dog is good about having a coon you will win your share of hunts. Always if you can leash lock them do it!

There is no better feeling then shinning 3 dogs treed together on a big circle tree and yours off in the didtance hammering it treed with a coon. That is the ultimate feeling when hunting in a cast. At least it is for me.

I would say that it would depend on the situation. If you are loosing bad enough that the other dogs need to draw some minus then u might want them off the leash to give them a chance to hang their self. Most of the time I would say lock em up

Posted by hilltopkennels on 05-21-2014 01:34 AM:

You could always let me have him and get yourself a me too dog and not worry bout it lol....I agree with if you draw slick tree ers let em cut loose and minus out if not leash lock em and win as many times as you can

Wouldn't trade the lil hound for the world. But have seem him get beat by mouthy me to dogs more than once. This time of year 25 strike kills him but In the winter when he's deep an under coons hes tuff to beat.

I use one strategy in all hunts that I am in. I call my dog for what he or she is doing period.
