Comp Hunt?

I have been thinking about maybe doing some comp hunting. As I am a complete fresh slate. What would be the best thing to do to get familiar with comp hunting? I know I need to learn the rules. But can a person go with someone as a spectator to kind of get a feel for how a hunt operates and goes throughout the hunt? I would just like to learn all I can about it before I ever tried to hunt in one so I don't look like an idiot. Thanks for any info and any and all input is welcome.

Yes learn the rules, in my experience with comp hunting the thing I see the most is people who say they were cheated don't no the rules and haven't takin the time to read them from front to back. I would also go be a spectator on a few cast because some rules seem confusing until you actually see them used. Good Luck!

Learn the rules inside out because alot of guys will cheat any way they can.

If you read the rules and take a coontreer you should be set.A lot of the details you will have to learn hands on.Im no expert but have had luck by doing it that way.

Learn the rules and spectate a time or two watch all things are handled then try your luck at it. LEARN THE RULES first of all and if its ok on the cast you go with make sure you stand close to the judge so you'll know how everything goes

Thanks for the info guys. I would definitely like to check it our for sure and see what it's about. They had a RQE for the world hunt within about 15 minutes of my house last night. I sure would have liked to been at the top of my game and had a hound in that race. I always say go big or go home. I'm not in it for the money or anything I would just like to see how some of my pleasure hounds stack up to some of these big name hounds. God bless and thanks again.

learning rules

The club thatt I am amember of has a club hunt once a month.
We don't do kill hunts during the season.
We hunt scorecards year round.
This was the way that I learned the rules.

Pike county. Its a low coon population here but we have a few here and there if you know where to drop at. I mostly hunt on private land that I have permission to hunt on. It's a little spot with no houses around for miles.

I come to Hazard every once in a while we could get together and I'll bring a score card and we could do a mock hunt

Know the rules, realize that dogs nor people are perfect and most of all leave your pride at home. You will have a better time.

Sounds like a plan to me, I would like to learn all I can about it.

read the rules over and over. find a hunt close to you and dive in head first. dont be affraid of loseing cause 75 percent lose in every cast. i just started this yr and ive won $235 in pkc and put a first place on my pup in ukc. it is fun.
